Nine Inch Nails live in Athens – July 20 2009

21 Jul

ticketThere are a few things that I realize when I attend to live shows every now and then.

Such as: I have to buy me a camera someday to get some decent photos.

There must be hundreds of better photos out there today than the ones you see on this blog.

The guy that stood in front of me did a wonderful job with his cell phone.

The concert was very successful, had a wonderful atmosphere and some 3000 people turned up at Rocks Theater – Melina Mercuri, maybe more.

Perhaps it was the good vibe set by the opener for both bands, Alec Empire, that got things going so nicely. Alec Empire is the digital hardcore project of Alexander Wilke-Steinhof,  founding member of the German band Atari Teenage Riot.

I have to admit, I had no beer this time but due to the warm summer weather I managed to down 3 bottles of water which made things a lot better.

One thing I have to say here before I talk about Jane’s Addiction.

I never liked their music.

It’s better for me to admit that Perry Farrell is a very nice performer, moving and jumping here and there, endlessly talking and encouraging the audience to participate and all that.

The four of them are very good musicians but their music is not my cup of tea.

No hard feelings.

Everything was working perfectly with all acts going on stage on time.

Nine Inch Nails came on at 10:15 to leave the stage 100 minutes later.

Just like Jane’s Addiction and Alec Empire, that was their first time in Greece and I was surprised of how many people knew the lyrics of their songs.

Great sound, great performance, great stuff…

Trent Reznor and his band managed to set the stage on fire and make people dance and sing and have a great time.

Reznor had a great selection of Nine Inch Nails tracks having the band members using almost every instrument that was on stage in order to perform “Head Like a Hole”, “Mr. Self Destruct“, “Hurt“, “The Fragile“…and I could go on and on writing here song titles.

They didn’t forget to play also the song of their collaboration with David Bowie,“I’m Afraid of Americans” as well as the cover version on Gary Numan’sMetal”.

Bass player Justin Meldal-Johnsen was using his bass guitar switching to keyboards while doing backing vocals, guitarist Robin Finck was running up and down the stage doing backing vocals, playing his guitars and whatever instrument he would come across and excellent Ilan Rubin was…plain excellent – both on drums and at the piano!

Seemed like Reznor was having fun last night.

nin live in athensSwitching from one keyboard to the other, playing the guitar and of course… singing, he proved us all why he was one of the 50 most influential personalities in USA for the 90’s.

It’s a pity that Nine Inch Nails announced they “wave” goodbye.

At least I was lucky enough to see them live on stage and like a friend said last night “so far, this might have been the best live show we’ve seen in years”.
