Garry Shider

I copy the following from

Legendary funk guitarist Garry Shider, whose work with Parliament-Funkadelic earned him a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has died. He was 56.

Shider was known to millions of fans as “Starchild” or “Diaperman“, the latter because of the loincloth he often wore onstage.

Shider’s son, Garrett, says his father died Wednesday at his home in Upper Marlboro, Md. He had been diagnosed with brain and lung cancer in March.

He then briefly went on tour one last time but had to stop because of his failing health.

Shider started his career as a young boy, performing gospel music in churches in his native New Jersey.

He was still a teenager when he met P-Funk mastermind George Clinton and soon became a mainstay of that musical family.

Ding An Sich

Its been quite a while since I last posted something about Ding An Sich, so I thought it would be nice to continue with their history.

So, this is where we stopped.

Going through a lot of line up changes, a new released followe “Old as Forever, New as Tomorrow”.

From April 1993 to October 1994, Ding An Sich recorded the album  “The Wanderer & His Shadow”.

A dreamy, atmospheric work which came out in 1995 both on vinyl and CD format.

This period {1993-1996} is distinguished for the substantial changes as far as the formation is concerned, but also their direction. Ding An Sich sustain as studio project only. The trinity consists of: Maria Batistatou – voices , George Ginis – Various / Effects , Nick Sarikostas – Programming / Keyboards , some good friends of the band, offered a helping hand, and the album The Wanderer & His Shadow was released at the dawn of 1996” the band quotes on myspace.

The Wanderer and His Shadow” that opens the album is an atmospheric track with German lyrics while “Several Ways” is a more uptempo track with English lyrics.

Both songs make clear to the listener that the sound of the band developed from the quitar oriented to a more electronic field…

Fire and Roses” is heavily influenced by the English band In The Nursery while “Love Under Discipline” shows an admiration to the German band Kraftwerk of the “Autobahn” era and the early synth/new wave bands of the early 80’s.

Certain Destinations Are Inevitable” is a wonderful song that reveals the originality of the sound of the new Ding An Sich and the way the band will follow in the years to come.

The Angels (Not Half so happy in Heaven)”.  That’s a new one. The band appears here with an oriental mood and dance beat. A man is accompanied on the vocals by two female singers.

Another Day” would be a great choice for the fans of In The Nursery as Ding An Sich move in this spirit once again.

Life Is Somewhere Else” is original, dreamy and very sweet track.

Versöhnung Über Den Gräbern” that follows has both Greek and German lyrics and a touch from Tangarine Dreams of the “Sorcerer” days.

I can’t remember if the track “The Secret That Can’t Be Kept” is featured on the vinyl edition, although I am almost sure it is only on the CD release.

It has Greek lyrics and it is a bit different from the rest of the album tracks.

“The Wanderer & His Shadow” closes with a 16 minute hidden track which could be the spooky soundscape of a deserted land, ending with a remix of the title track..

Starting point of the period 1996 – 2004 could be regarded any year after 1996. The oddity of this statement, lies in the fluidity in which the two remaining members – George Ginis and Nick Sarikostas – found themselves. Until 2004, many female singers made some demo recordings with the band. These recordings formed the collection named We Are Involved In A War. Some of them may be recorded again, for the forthcoming album.”

Life is Somewhere Else” appeared on the “Audio” compilation CD of the Greek Audio magazine.

In 1997, the Greek compilation “Girls Re-Write Rock” was released, featuring three Ding An Sich track and three different ladies singing on each track: “Comedy (Joker’s Mix)” (featuring Marina), “Fun” (featuring Maria) and “Replica 5 (Cindy Mix)” (featuring Nadia).

Other bands participating to this compilation: Sonar BlipsForward Music Quintet, This Fluid,  Blue Birds Refuse To Fly and many more.

By the same year, Voice magazine, released the compilation “Pop Secrets …From The Greek Underground Scene” which brought back the Ding An Sich track “A Hollow Image Of Fulfilled Desire” and “Comedy”.

In 1998, a new album came out by the title “We Are Involved In A War” featuring 9 tracks that were recorded between the years 1994-1998.

1. Der Name Der Rose (a rose for Maria mix)

2. Fun (111 mix)

3. There Is A Dream (Corinthian mix)

4. People (111 mix)

5. Comedy (two face mix)

6. Someday I’ll Die (maybe then I’ll be with you?)

7. Game Of You (aboriginal mix)

8. P.S. (novomix)

9. Naxos

This album was self-produced and self-released…

The track “There is a Dream (Corinthian mix)” was also featured in the compilation album “The Dark Side Of Electronica” which came out through CAPP records.

In 2002, the Italian record label Decadance, released the compilation album “Decadance compilation vol.1” featuring the track “A hollow image of a fulfilled desire”.

As the old recordings of the band were in the archives of CAPP records, who released “Old as Forever, New as Tomorrow”, when the compilation “We’re On The Planet” came out, the old Ding An Sich song “Wandering” was also featured.

On June 2005, Universal-Greece released the compilation “Greek Electro 02” featuring the Ding An Sich track “Secrets Made Flesh” and in 2005 the German label Echozone featured the track “Strength” on the compilation “Gothic Visions”.

“The dawn of 2005 showed good signs for the years good prospects for what is about to happen. G.Ginis and N. Sarikostas work hard for the preparation of the new album, while Nick Sebekopoulos (or Acimi) joins as guitarist, after a while, Kely Kapetanaki expresses her interest to participate as frontwoman and singer. And the band is finally formed as follows: Kely Kapetanaki – voice , Nick Sebekopoulos – guitar , George Ginis – Effects / Voice / sequencers , Nick Sarikostas – Bass / voice / keyboards / tibetan bowl / theremin”

Kostas Zafiriou of Pink Cream 69

The person at the intro of this video is drummer Kostas Zafiriou, born in Switzerland in 1966.

In 1987 he was one of the founding members of the German hard rock band Pink Cream 69.

The group formed in Karlsruhe and gained their first contract by winning music magazine Metal Hammer’s newcomer competition in Ludwigsburg one year after forming.

The line up had as follows: Andi Deris, Dennis Ward, Kostas Zafiriou and Alfred Koffler.

In 1994, Andi Deris left the band to join German power metal band Helloween. He was replaced by British singer David Readman. The band, often referred to as The Pinkies, became a five-piece in 2003, when Uwe Reitenauer was hired to support guitar player Alfred Koffler, who suffered from neuropathy.

Zafiriou joined the German power metal Axxis as a session musician in 2004, when they released the album “Time Machine”.

This post was made with a lot of help from wikipedia…
