Kristin Hersh – Wyatt at the Coyote Palace (Omnibus Press 2016)

Kristin Hersh to release ‘Wyatt At The Coyote Palace’ double CD/book combination (UK Oct 28 / USA Nov 11).

KristinHersh_WATCP+Book+Cover+FrontThe immensely talented Kristin Hersh has announced that her forthcoming solo effort “Wyatt at the Coyote Palace,” a double CD/ book combination, will be released by Omnibus Press in the UK and Australia on October 28, 2016 and in the USA on November 11, 2016.

‘Wyatt’ is the third release in the ground-breaking book-CD format that Hersh began with her previous solo album “Crooked” and Throwing Muses’ 2013 release “Purgatory/Paradise”.  Since sharing essays and tour diaries on her own website, she has published the critically acclaimed “Paradoxical Undressing” in the UK (released as “Rat Girl”in the USA), a children’s book “Toby Snax, and “Don’t Suck, Don’t Die,” a personal account of her long friendship with the late Vic Chesnutt, which earned her rave reviews.

“Wyatt” includes true stories and songs of love and loss, combining Hersh’s humor with the pains and travails of a life spent constantly in motion. Defined by potent guitars, addictive melodies and poignant lyrics, this release is a serious sign of strength and depth, bringing the listener into what the BBC calls Hersh’s “dark and dizzy world.”

Recorded in at her favorite studio in Portsmouth, RI, with engineer Steve Rizzo at the helm, Hersh performs and creates all instruments and sounds on this 24-track opus, including guitar, bass, drums, piano, horns, cello and even field recordings.  While the songs were written in the last 5 years over a turbulent period in her life, the prose was inspired by her autistic son Wyatt and his fascination with an abandoned apartment building inhabited by coyotes.  Wyatt often visited and even filmed the coyotes during the recording of the music, yet suddenly his intense fascination came to an end.

Hersh comments, “I had so loved his love of the place. Throwing Muses’ drummer, Dave – my best friend since third grade – decided that Wyatt needed to encapsulate his sense memories of the coyote palace, make the experience finite, like bottling a memory. Dave thinks we’ll see it again, and Wyatt’s love of the place will come back, when the images have been filtered through Wyatt’s intense and fascinating psychology.”

Kristin Hersh PortraitSince founding her influential art-punk band Throwing Muses at the age of 14 in Providence, Hersh has spent quality time confounding expectations and breaking rules – both hers and others. From life as the reluctant front person for the Muses to the solo career she launched in 1994, which she swore would never happen, to founding an ambitious and altruistic nonprofit and through to her recent foray into a surprisingly successful new career as an author, Hersh continues to push herself to the boundaries of her artistry and imagination. She founded the power trio 50FOOTWAVE in 2004 and has since released six mini-albums, including the ‘Bath White’ EP in summer of 2016.

In November, she will return to the UK and Ireland for a rare solo tour. “An Evening with Kristin Hersh” celebrates her endless creativity with readings and songs spanning her entire career.
Kristin will also tour the USA starting in late November of 2016.

Avarice In Audio – Anthracite Nights EP (Alfa Matrix 2016)

a0551117383_10

Taken from Avarice In Audio’s successful second album “Apollo & Dionysus”,here comes the final single from this album: “Anthracite Nights”. Avarice In Audio have brought the thunder with this song, and shown to never rest on their laurels. Always working on new content, and always delivering diverse but thought-provoking material each and every time.

Augmented with remixes by label mates Venal Flesh, Junksista and Entrzelle, alongside the Anthracite Remix contest winners Alien:Nation, Antibody and Restriction 9.

The sonic palette varies from harsh aggro tech to more cheerful synth pop, to brooding atmosphere and club bangers, “Anthracite Nights” has a solid pedigree behind it and serves as a fitting send off to the “Apollo & Dionysus” era. The artwork, commissioned by premier artist Tomoki Hayasaka/Sheerheart Design shows a new depth of visual creativity, closing off the orb design used for every prior AIA E.P release. With a new dawn comes new visual and sonic aesthetic.

Finally combined with an original exclusive track “The Temptation & Expulsion”, an orchestral closer for the era of the first two Avarice In Audio albums, the triumvirate are ready to move forward and record their third album, while working on live shows.

METROLAND – Brother (Remixes) EP (Alfa Matrix 2016)

metroland

Brother” is the third and final single from “Things Will Never Sound The Same Again“, the album that Metroland created solely as an In Memoriam for their sadly departed friend, sound engineer and Passenger: Louis Zachert who passed away exactly 1 year ago.

For this new release, Metroland reached out to their fan base and fellow artists with a remix competition, giving them a chance to use music as their personal message. The immense feedback resulted in Metroland having a difficult time choosing between all the entered remixed versions.

The outcome offers you 7 superb and very emotional remixes spread across 2 separate EP’s, each remix created to pay homage and to honor the beloved Passenger L. within a range of dark sounding versions to rock solid 80’s vintage sounds.

Ummagma – Galacticon (from ‘Frequency’ EP – Moon Sounds Records 2016)

Ummagma ‘Galacticon’ Video Reveals Beauty of Ukraine ~ Canadian-Ukrainian dreampop duo features Middle Ages town of Kremenets.

Dreampop duo Ummagma presents their spacey ambient track ‘Galacticon’, focusing on the ethereal element. The video, which premiered in Exclaim! Magazine, features much floating and flying, with aerial footage taken in western Ukraine over the town of Kremenets, band member Alexander Kretov‘s hometown and one of the only cities in this country that managed to stave off the Mongol-Tatars’ influence for centuries thanks to an extensive network of secret underground tunnels. In this video you can see the ruins of the Bona castle and a mixture of Soviet and Polish style structures, left over from many years under Polish rule until it was annexed the Soviet Union at the end of World War One.
Galacticon is perhaps the dreamiest and most innocent of all tracks on our latest EP, likely connected to the fact that it was written under the simplest of conditions, compared to the multi-layered way we usually write music,” explains Ummagma vocalist Shauna McLarnon. “Now that we’re based in Peterborough, Ukraine seems a world away but it still inspired great things for us and it will always be in our hearts. But I think Canada gave us the head space we needed in order to pull off our latest EP“.
In December, Ummagma released their new ‘Frequency’ EP, featuring five original tracks and three remixes of ‘Lama’ by several legendary artists, including Cocteau Twins kingpin Robin Guthrie and Malcolm Holmes of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, both of whom bring their signature sound to the mix.
This EP follows their two debut LPs ‘Ummagma’ and ‘Antigravity’, released simultaneously in 2012. The album takes the listener through a cosmic yet introspective dreampop and ambient journey, tinged with shoegaze and synthpop flair. After relocating from Ukraine to Canada, ‘Frequency’ was the creative output of a search for optimism that helped the band put the current war behind them and to find new ground. It explores such themes as space and distance, timelessness, escapism, and the search for tranquility.

The band’s sound is reminiscent of early 4AD early output with hues of Cocteau Twins, David Sylvian, Mike Oldfield, Vangelis and Stereolab. Comprised of Shauna McLarnon and Alexander Kretov, they hail from Whitehorse, Canada and Kremenets, Ukraine respectively. Having first met in the centre of Moscow, they moved to Ukraine during the Orange Revolution but now call Peterborough, Canada home.

Ummagma previously won the 2013 Alternative Eurovision on Amazing Radio, representing Ukraine, and has been featured in Rolling Stone RussiaBBC6 Music, national Radio 3 in Spain, Electronic Sound Magazine, Louderthanwar, Impose Magazine, The Examiner, Noisey Brazil and Northern Transmissions. The ‘Frequency’ EP features in 30+ ‘Best of 2015′ charts and was named the Top Release of 2015 by Stereo Embers Magazine and Dreampop Album of the Year by The Record Stache.
Ummagma ‘Frequency’ is out now via Moon Sounds Records, one of the most dynamic shoegaze labels in America and home to such bands as Dead Leaf Echo, Ceremony, The Foreign Resort, The Vandelles, Static Daydream, A*Star, Porcupine, Follow The Sea and Australia’sBloodhounds On My Trail.

Novanta – Hello We’re Not Enemies (Seashell Records 2016)

Milan-based Novanta releases ‘Hello We’re Not Enemies’ LP.

Novanta 1
Two years after releasing ‘Best-Selling Dreams’ to wide acclaim around the world, Novanta has released his new album ‘Hello We’re Not Enemies’ on Seashell Records. The first single from this release is‘Goðafoss’

Novanta is Manfredi Lamartina, a musician who is originally from Palermo but has been based in Milan for many years now. On this album, Novanta further evolves his sound, falling effortlessly between shoegaze, post-rock and electronica.

This release underlines the importance of empathy as its core idea. In a period where human relationships are often based on aggression and on the division between “us” and “them”, here we find that we’re not enemies. This album is also an expression of love towards Iceland, a country where Manfredi Lamartina spent some time traveling last year.

“Goðafoss is about a man who wants to be a god, shaking the world and erasing all the evil. But mankind is indifferent to everything: love, compassion, empathy. ‘Hello We’re Not Enemies’ is about empathy: we are living in a world where all men are involved in an absurd battle against each other,” explains Manfredi Lamartina. “Iceland seems a little piece of paradise, with breathtaking landscapes and a general feeling of wonder. I went to Iceland last year and I really fell in love with that country. “Hello We’re Not Enemies” is deeply influenced by Iceland, which is why the album came out on June 17th, Icelandic National Day.”

The songs featured on ‘Hello We’re Not Enemies’ involve collaboration with some very talented artists, including Australian Ian Bonnar (In Every Dream A Nightmare Waits), Claudio Cataldi, Fabrizio De Felice (Bialogard), Giuseppe Musto (Il ragazzo del Novantanove), Raniero Federico Neri (Albedo), and Giampiero Riggio (Haas). Joining Novanta on “Goðafoss” are Raniero Federico Neri on lyrics and vocals and Giuseppe Musto on drums.

“Hello We’re Not Enemies” released on June 17 and is now available in digital download and limited edition cassette via Seashell Records‘ Bandcamp site.

Rachel Mason – Tigers in the Dark (Cleopatra Records / Practical Records 2016)

Renowned performance artist musician Rachel Mason to release ‘Tigers in the Dark’ single.

Rachel Mason - Tigers in The Dark (cover)

Renowned performance artist and musician Rachel Mason, freshly signed to Los Angeles-based Cleopatra Records, has announced her forthcoming single ‘Tigers in the Dark’, along with an accompanying video, directed by Matthew Spiegelman and choreographed by Haylee Nichele. This is the first single from the forthcoming album ‘Das Ram’.The single, which is due out on September 9, will be followed by the ‘Das Ram‘ LP, to be released digitally by Cleopatra Records and on limited edition cassette by Practical Records.

This song is written from the voice of an imaginary animal-human hybrid, who expresses the idea that real life only occurs on the stage, as it represents the creative dimension where everything is possible.

This video’s first screening took place during an immersive theatrical performance at LTD Los Angeles, which involved infamous DJ Rodney Bingenheimer (a.k.a. Rodney on the Roq) and a virtual reincarnation of his legendary English Disco.

‘Das Ram’ is the first complete set of songs written and performed with Mason’s longtime creative partner Jeff Hassay. An artist, writer and publisher, who also co-runs an art gallery, Hassay recorded, mixed and produced these tracks at his studio in Los Feliz. He has previously worked with Jonathan Richman (Modern Lovers), Jennifer Herrema (Royal Trux, Black Bananas), Avi Buffalo, Chris Cohen (Deerhoof), and Carolyn Penny Packer. (Bouquet).

Tigers In the Dark is one of those songs that felt like it was already written when I started singing it. Jeff was playing this little guitar riff and I just heard the lyrics and the melody instantly. It felt like it was just handed to me,” explains Rachel Mason. “The voice of the character in the Tigers song feels like it just wanted to exist with or without me. I’m just the vessel that gets to carry it out into the world right now. The video feels like it magically coalesced.”

In scripts, sculpture, rock operas, performances and songs spanning over a decade, Mason has created imagined worlds where animals, objects, mythological creatures and all forms of non-human entities have taken shape through her body and voice. Her shows wrap the audience in fantastical narratives which interweave musical, theatrical and narrative elements into unexpected operatic journeys.

She has recorded 13 full-length albums and three operas, including her most recent unique rock opera feature film The Lives of Hamilton Fish, which toured the world in 2015 and was released this month on VOD. Mason has exhibited her visual art and performance work at museums, film and performance festivals internationally. Her work has garnered press attention from the likes of Vice, Interview Magazine, The New York Times, Artforum, LA Weekly, The New Yorker, The Los Angeles Times, Art in America, and Flash Art.

Mason has shared stages, toured and collaborated with numerous artists, including Sharon Von Etten, Jennifer Herrema (RTX), Phosphorescent, Devendra Banhardt, Prince Rama, Light Asylum, Josephine Foster, Diane Cluck, and Excepter. She has also exhibited sculpture, video and performance art at many of the country’s leading art galleries.

She is currently co-directing a documentary feature on Circus of Books, the notorious adult bookstores owned by her parents, which played a major role in the Silver Lake and Hollywood music scenes and gay culture. Her ‘Starseeds’ Art Project has also being exhibited at LTD Los Angeles until August 14.

A Shoreline Dream – Whirlwind (Latenight Weeknight Records 2016)

A Shoreline Dream gear up to release ‘Whirlwind’ single.

A Shoreline Dream - Whirlwind (cover) 449KB

Whirlwind‘ is the third single from the ever-evolving new record by A Shoreline Dream, which is being released song by song before its completion. This new track dives into the harsh reality of the constant changes occurring around us and the fact that everything continues to speed forward throughout our short lives.

Originating in Barnum, Colorado, A Shoreline Dream is Ryan Policky(vocalist/guitarist/producer) and Erik Jeffries (guitar). Together, the two crafted this latest ‘Whirlwind’.
With the recent death of singer Ryan Policky’s father, and a murder occuring right next door to where A Shoreline Dream writes, practices and records, the motivation to finish and release this track was high on the band’s to-do list for the summer. Riding a fine line between alternative rock, goth and post-punk and with a bass heavy overtone, the song dips and dives into layers of guitars and vocal chants, heavily influenced by the changing of seasons, and the speed of life for this band now celebrating its 10th year of music experimentation.
As autumn comes and the release of ‘Whirlwind’ hits, new music will be developed that brings in the next wave of what’s to soon become A Shoreline Dream’s first vinyl album.

A Shoreline Dream makes what is best described as “progressive shoegaze”, combining lush sampled textures, organic instrumentation and vocals layered like a synth. Their sound is an invigorating mixture of sounds from the likes of Bauhaus, Ride and Sigur Rós mixed with early Dead Can Dance.

Over the past decade, the band has produced numerous acclaimed releases under their own label (Latenight Weeknight Records) and has intensively collaborating with legends such as Ulrich Schnauss and Mark Kramer. Recently they landed distribution by cult UK indie label Rocket Girl Records while recording with Ulrich in Leytonstone, and have also remixed an Engineers’ song for progressive label gods K-Scope.

Stella Diana – Nitrocris – (Vipchoyo Sound Factory 2016)

Nitocris LP (cover)

Stellar Italian shoegaze outfit Stella Diana have releasec their long-awaited ‘Nitocris’ LP through Italian label Vipchoyo Sound Factory.

The album release was preceded by two singles – the first is Sulphur, a dark and sad ballad, like a numbing homeopathic remedy, that is a beautiful slow-burner, beginning quite slowly and then seemingly exploding into infinite space. The second is Dedu’n, which presents a darker sound than usual for the band.

Each song on the new album is heavily rhythmic and fuses shoegaze stylings with 80’s new wave, similar to the sound of Echo and the Bunnymen or The Chameleons, taking the listener to obscure and atmospheric territory. In Dedu’n, the voice is drowned in reverb with a low bass and psychedelic guitars… the effect is a long and exciting spatial sound wave.

Dedu’n (or Dedwen) was a Nubian god worshipped during ancient times, documented as early as 2400 BC. The earliest Egyptian writings about Dedu’n indicates that he was the god of incense, an extremely expensive luxury commodity, largely produced in Nubia. The album name itself is named for Nitocris, an ancient Egyptian queen and the last Pharaoh of the Sixth Dynasty. According to the chronicles, she was very beautiful but it’s not particularly mentioned. The album artwork defines the album’s title – an abandoned woman, who is beautiful, but sad and suffering. Ethereal and elusive, without a face.

It’s likely that “she” did not exist in native Egyptian inscriptions,” comments Stella Diana frontman Dario Torre. “This ‘not existing’ thing is very interesting and fascinating. Often you do something, you live, you breathe, you work hardly, you love. Nevertheless, for the people you don’t exist.”

The new single and forthcoming LP follows up the band’s recent Alhena EP, released in 2015 by both British and Italian labels and ranked among the ‘Best of 2015’ on numerous blogger lists.

In comparison to Alhena and the band’s previous albums, ‘Nitocris’ is somewhat more introspective. “We now have three members, which has brought about a change in our sound as we’ve become a lot more focused on the atmosphere, as well as changes in intensity within the music,” explains Dario Torre.

Politburo – Barrington Way (Leonard Skully Records 19 August 2016)

Manchester psych rock stalwards Politburo drop first single from ‘Barrington Way’ LP.

Barrington Way sleeve

Long-running, Manchester psychedelic rock/folk band Politburo are releasing “Barrington Way”, the lead single from sophomore album of the same name, which releases in mid-August via Leonard Skully Records.

Politburo started out as a four-piece, but the line-up has changed over the years. Today the band consists of founding members Nick Alexander (vocals, guitar, tambourine) and Dominic ‘Dom’ James (drums, percussion, keyboards), as well as John Loveguns (guitar), Phil Meredith (guitar, keyboards), Steven Joseph (bass), and invited guest Chloé Sancho (vocals).

The band began in 1999 when they were teenage dreamers. Inspired by Mancunian legends of yore and a contempt for the dying grandees of Brit Pop. “I was out to try and create great music, but sometimes I guess it was art terrorism,” says Nick Alexander.

We knew we’d have to create our own different world to inhabit. The idea was that the right people would come to us… we wouldn’t have to go to them and force something down their collective throat,” explains Dom James.

In 2007, the band set up their own recording studio 11STSQ in Manchester’s bohemian Northern Quarter. Politburo hosted numerous parties there, quickly earning them an infamous reputation, with bands clamouring to be part of some hazy and spectacular nights.

It was around this time that Politburo members established Kraak Gallery. Seeking a regular musical fix, locals began to regularly turn up unsolicited at the door. Kraak Gallery quickly became a phenomenon in the Manchester underground arts scene and soon attracted national press, also receiving deserved mention in Manchester nightlife notes by Dave Haslam in ‘Life After Dark’.

Today’s Aatma space inherited Kraak Gallery’s original purpose of holding gigs and parties, with the upstairs 11STSQ more focused as a dedicated recording studio. Upon meeting the band amidst all of this activity, label boss and guru Professor Leonard Skully immediately knew these were the kind of people he wished to associate himself with.

In 2012, Politburo released their first album ‘Sally and Prinss Revisited’ through Leonard Skully Records. Around this time, the band found themselves at the epicentre of the Northern Quarter’s burgeoning music scene.

It was as if we’d populated an entire district. Bars were springing up. Cafes. People had returned to the area, in large part because we invented our own music industry—a venue, a record label, a recording studio,” says Dom James.

The ‘Barrington Way’ album was recorded, mixed and mastered at their beloved studio 11STSQ. For this release, the band was joined by French singer-songwriter Chloe Sancho, who contributed vocals on at least half of the songs, becoming an important part of the album’s sound. “She has a timeless quality, a pained quality,” says Nick Alexander. “Her voice is beautiful, like a ghost.”

We tried to capture how we sound live. But often there’d be something we’d want in there, that would take weeks to create or realise. Crazy schemes, such as getting artist Florian Fusco to come over from Berlin and play the first ever Random Appropriation Synth committed to record. We followed our noses. We never let ourselves be put off by the seeming impossibility of an idea,” says Dom James.

As of August 19, the ‘Barrington Way’ LP will be released on 12” vinyl and digital download via Leonard Skully Records. It is already available for pre-order (vinyl) and will be also a free download on Politburo’s Bandcamp site. The band has also announced a U.K. tour, including the following dates:
