Kristin Hersh – “Soma Gone Slapstick’ from ‘Wyatt at the Coyote Palace’ release (Omnibus Press 2016)

Kristin Hersh presents “Soma Gone Slapstick” single from “Wyatt At The Coyote Palace”, announces U.S. tour dates

“Wyatt At The Coyote Palace” double CD/ book set releases Oct 28 (UK/Aus/NZ) & Nov 11 (USA/Canada)
unnamed

The incredibly gifted singer/songwriter and author Kristin Hersh has announced the first single “Soma Gone Slapstick” from her forthcoming solo effort “Wyatt at the Coyote Palace”. The new single is premiering in The Quietus. This double CD/ book combination will be released by Omnibus Press in the UK, Australia and New Zealand on October 28, 2016 and in the USA and Canada on November 11, 2016.

“I heard Soma move through seasons: fall on the rebound, a manic spring, a cruel winter, and through places: California, Chicago, New Orleans, a protest march in Koreatown. When I finished, it was dawn, my engineer and I had coffee and I walked home through fat flakes falling down instead of sideways. Goofy + falling + precise + muscular = soma with a healthy dose of slapstick,” says Kristin Hersh, who currently resides in Rhode Island.

‘Wyatt’ is the third release in the ground-breaking book-CD format that Hersh began with her previous solo album “Crooked” and Throwing Muses’ 2013 release “Purgatory/Paradise”.  Since sharing essays and tour diaries on her own website, she has published the critically acclaimed “Paradoxical Undressing” in the UK (released as “Rat Girl”in the USA), a children’s book “Toby Snax, and “Don’t Suck, Don’t Die,” a personal account of her long friendship with the late Vic Chesnutt, which earned her rave reviews.

“Wyatt” is a collection of true stories and songs of love and loss, combining Hersh’s humor with the pains and travails of a life spent constantly in motion. Defined by potent guitars, addictive melodies and poignant lyrics, this release is a serious sign of strength and depth, bringing the listener into what the BBC calls Hersh’s “dark and dizzy world.”

Recorded in at her favorite studio in Portsmouth, RI with engineer Steve Rizzo at the helm, Hersh performs and creates all instruments and sounds on this 24-track opus, including guitar, bass, drums, piano, horns, cello and even field recordings.  While the songs were written in the last 5 years over a turbulent period in her life, the prose was inspired by her son Wyatt, who is on the autism spectrum, and his fascination with an abandoned apartment building inhabited by coyotes.  Wyatt often visited and even filmed the coyotes during the recording of the music, yet suddenly his intense fascination came to an end.

Hersh comments, “I had so loved his love of the place. Throwing Muses’ drummer, Dave – my best friend since third grade – decided that Wyatt needed to encapsulate his sense memories of the coyote palace, make the experience finite, like bottling a memory. Dave thinks we’ll see it again, and Wyatt’s love of the place will come back, when the images have been filtered through Wyatt’s intense and fascinating psychology.”

Kristin Hersh is most recognized as the front person for the influential art-punk band Throwing Muses, which she founded at the age of 14 in Providence. Hersh has spent quality time confounding expectations and breaking rules – both hers and others. From life as the reluctant front person for the Muses to the solo career she launched in 1994, which she swore would never happen, to founding an ambitious altruistic nonprofit and her recent foray into a surprisingly successful new career as an author, Hersh continues to push herself to the boundaries of her artistry and imagination. She also currently fronts the power trio 50FOOTWAVE, founded in 2004, having released six mini-albums, including the ‘Bath White’ EP in summer of 2016.

In November, she returns to the UK and Ireland for a rare solo acoustic tour in support of her new release, with an additional date just added in London due to popular demand. Her subsequent U.S. tour kicks off in Seattle on November 29An Evening with Kristin Hersh” celebrates her endless creativity with readings and songs spanning her entire career.

Rodney Cromwell – Fax Message Breakup (Happy Robots Records 2016)

London’s Rodney Cromwell Announces ‘Fax Message Breakup’ EP

rodney-cromwell-fax-message-breakup-cover

Happy Robots Records has announced that they will release ‘Fax Message Breakup’, the new five-track EP from Rodney Cromwell.
Rodney Cromwell’s debut album ‘Age of Anxiety’ was a surprising left-field critical hit featuring in over 30 ‘Best of 2015’ charts including Electronic Sound Magazine and The Electricity Club, who also named him ‘Most Promising New Act’. The track ‘Barry Was An Arms Dealer’ featured in the fan voted 2015 Official Festive 50.
Rodney Cromwell is the nom-de-plume of Adam Cresswell, founding member of indie-folktronica band SALOON (who had four entries in John Peel’s Festive 50 & recorded three Peel Sessions) and one half of acclaimed electronic two piece ARTHUR & MARTHA.
Although PHIL COLLINS and his infamous split with his second wife inspired its title, there is none of the vapid over-produced bombast of Collins’ work in Cromwell’s lo-fi disco lament. ’Fax Message Breakup’ has become a fan favourite, having resonated with many.
In a miserable year that has seen the passing of loved musical artists, disruption and political upheavals, the melancholia of ‘Fax Message Breakup’ is very much of the zeitgeist; a paean to despair and defeat with an incessant disco beat.  With the inherent nihilism of its chorus “I can’t do this anymore, I don’t know what it’s for” it is perhaps the perfect soundtrack for 2016.
The EP also features four exclusive remixes. ‘Fax Message Breakup’ is remixed by HOLOGRAM TEEN (ex-STEREOLAB synth-wizardess Morgane Lhote) who brings her glitchy motorik disco sound to the party and by regular collaborator AUW, who stretches the title track into something akin to a dark Depeche Mode synth epic.  CHRIS FRAINfrom Colorado remixes ‘Baby Robot’ in a 1970s space disco vein – file between Meco’s ‘Star Wars Theme’ and Space’s ‘Magic Fly’.  And London’s THE LEAF LIBRARY close the EP with a beautifully restrained remix of ‘Cassiopeia’ that sounds like Brian Eno collaborating with Galaxie 500.
‘Fax Message Breakup’ features Alice Hubley (Arthur & Martha, Cosines) on additional synth and Richard Salt (Controllers) on guitar. The video is produced by Dariy Karyakin and features Alisa Karsova.
‘Fax Message Breakup’ EP will be available for digital download onNovember 11, 2016. The album ‘Age of Anxiety’ is out now on CD and digitally. Both are released by Happy Robots Records and distributed by Cargo Records.

TRACKLIST

1. Fax Message Breakup (Single Mix)
2. Fax Message Breakup (Hologram Teen’s Video Suitors Remix)
3. Baby Robot (Chris Frain Remix)
4. Fax Message Breakup (AUW’s Obsessive Perfection Remix)

5. Cassiopeia (The Leaf Library Remix)

LIVE DATES

Dyr Faser – ‘Trio’ EP (2016)

Boston’s Dyr Faser announces forthcoming ‘Trio’ EP, releases first single ‘Estranged’

dyr-faser-trio-cover

Boston-based trio Dyr Faser have announced they will release their new EP ‘Trio’ and are teasing this new release with forerunner single‘Estranged’. On ‘Trio’, the band cleverly blends post-punk, electronic, and psychedelia, often with southern guitar elements.

Based in Boston, Dyr Faster is comprised of Eric Boomhower (vocals, guitar, synth, Casio), Thalia Zedek (guitar, slide, backing vocals) andKatherine ‘Kate’ Murray (synth).

Altough multi-instrumentalist Eric Boomhower originally began Dyr Faser as a solo project, he was eventually joined by indie rock icon Thalia Zedek (Come, Uzi, Live Skull, Thalia Zedek Band). After many recordings, buzz-worthy shows and a successful tour, they were joined by Kate Murray on synth and again head out for additional touring in both the USA and Canada.

Together they make music that is entrancing, hypnotic, dreamy, kraut-rockish, and meditative. On ‘Trio’ EP, they fuse the European synth avant garde and krautrock leanings of Eric Boomhower and Katherine Murray with the American guitar stylings of Thalia Zedek.

“The track ‘Den of Sables’ is how I imagine it’d be when Soft Cell meets The Gun Club,” says Thalia Zedek, whose lengthy career includes founding Come with Codeine‘s Chris Brokaw and releasing four albums for that project. She has toured with world with Come and Live Skull.

For the first time in the band’s history, Eric and Thalia sing together, sharing vocals prominently on ‘Hybrid Souls’. Drum loops, synth swirl, dueling guitars, melodic vocals and electronic drum loops make for a hypnotic and inimitable release.

“We made this record after years of Thalia and I supporting each other’s music. As one time housemates, we talked about music a lot. And unbelievably, I found Kate who shared a love for Krautrock and space rock. With this EP I hope to bring these sounds and talent to the pop world,” says Eric Boomhower.

Dyr Faser just kicked off their ‘Flat Earth No Dinosaurs’ tour with Your 33 Black Angels and The Veldt. Live dates follow:

Perpacity – Vain in a World (2016)

Perpacity – Vain in a World (2016)
Perpacity gear up to release Erasure-esque ‘Vain in a World’ single.
perpacity-arise-cover
British-Danish synth pop duo Perpacity will soon release their new single ‘Vain in a World’ on September 16. This rather Erasure-esque track follows accolades for the single ‘9725′ and b-side ‘Eternal ft. Nordik Fire’. Both tracks are from their forthcoming second album‘Arise’. Comprised of 14 tracks, it is scheduled for release on October 7.

Perpacity is a duo comprised of Ian Harling and Martin Nyrup, who reside in Bristol (UK) and Copenhagen (Denmark) respectively. Their music exhibits a strong command of melody and texture, characterized by unique dark moving electronic soundscapes and vocals to set your heart alight. This is genuine, unconditional love for synthpop or dance-pop.

Martin Nyrup started to craft music back in the days of the Commodore 64. Progressing to other synth and computer-related instruments and gradually mastering recording technologies, he fairly quickly got involved in writing music for the gaming industry. After moving onto the PC, he worked for various game studios creating music, game effects and conversions for the many soundcards of that era.

He met Perpacity vocalist Ian Harling when working in the gaming industry, who originally hails from the Isle of Man. Ian laid down vocals to one of Martin’s compositions, giving birth to Perpacity some eight years ago. Perpacity released their debut album‘The Sinner Inclination’in early 2015, followed by the singles ‘Obscene’, ‘Save Me’ and ‘Volatile Cohesion’.

“When we set out to write the new album we agreed to not try to go for a specific mood, theme or atmosphere – that whether a song or a track made the initial cut depended purely on whether we like it and whether it speaks to us. We purposely allowed other genres to influence what came out of each song,” explains Martin Nyrup.

Martin’s musical influences include Depeche Mode, Yazoo, New Order, and Kraftwerk. These strikingly differ from Ian’s, who says Irish bands, both indie and folk, such as Clannad, The Cranberries and Plague Monkeys have deeply inspired him, as well as Elsiane and Sarah McLachlan.

“One of the reasons that Martin and I work well together is that we don’t have the same tastes in music, often quite the opposite,” saysIan Harling.

The ‘Arise’ LP was mastered by Alexander Kretov from renowned dreampop band Ummagma. On October 7, ‘Arise’ will be released on CD and digital download via the duo’s Bandcamp, Amazon, and elsewhere. It is already available for pre-order on Bandcamp, with immediate download of ‘9725’ and ‘Eternal ft. Nordik Fire’.

The Foreign Resort – The American Dream & North American Tour (Moon Sounds Records – USA)

The Foreign Resort Reissues ‘The American Dream’, Touring North America.

the-foreign-resort-the-american-dream-cover

The Foreign Resort will be reissuing CDs for ‘The American Dream’ EP via Texas-based label Moon Sounds Records and have announced dates for their upcoming North American tour. This will be their 11th tour on the continent and will also include 3 Canadian dates.

‘The American Dream’ consists of five songs with a simpler but more intense expression than ever heard before from the band. Following up their 2014 album ‘New Frontiers’, which was produced and mixed byJohn Fryer (Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Cocteau Twins)and ranked among top albums of the year in many blogs and stations like WZBC and KDHX, the band first released ‘The American Dream’ in October 2015.

Led by singer and songwriter Mikkel Jakobsen, The Foreign Resort are Denmark’s finest musical export of post-punk and dark new wave, combining the shadowy mysticism of The Cure’s Pornography era with a driving production aesthetic akin to LCD Soundsystem. Intricate reverb-enveloped guitar lines and Mikkel’s taut and sincere vocal delivery glide over Steffan Petersen’s motorik bass and Morten Hansen’s powerful drumming.Having toured with The Raveonettes, A Place to Bury Strangersand Swervedriver, they have also shared bills with bands like DIIV, The Soft Moon, The KVB and Slowdive.

This tour is one of three made possible through a successful crowdfunding campaign, for which they ended up cooking Danish dinner and playing intimate shows in several American homes, which brought them even closer to the American people.

“That experience goes beyond anything we have done before and it’s so great when we felt that passion about our music and could share it with others. We have some amazing fans and we are so grateful for that,” says Mikkel Jakobsen.

The Foreign Resort are addicted to the allure of America’s lost highways. Since 2010, the band has rigorously played more than 350 shows across the United States and Europe. Highlights include performances at SXSW, Iceland Airwaves, the CMJ Music Marathon, and one of the world’s largest Goth festivals Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig, Germany.

“There’s gonna be some pretty intense drives between cities, but that’s another thing we like about touring. Experiencing countries from the road and, of course, from the many venues we play at. We can’t wait to come over,” says frontman Mikkel Jakobsen.

This autumn, the band’s 2011 EP ‘The Foreign Resort’ finally gets a much deserved vinyl re-issue though Moon Sounds Records thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign via PledgeMusic. This September-October visit to North America is the final tour in support of ‘The American Dream’, after which the band shall return to the studio to record a new full length, set for release in 2017.

The Veldt – European Tour / ‘The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur’ EP (Leonard Skully Records 2016)

Legendary Alternative Soul Shoegazers The Veldt Kick Off European Tour.

the-veldt-the-shocking-fuzz-of-your-electric-fur-cover

Just days after completing their Central Canadian tour, The Veldt have just kicked off their European tour with Reverence Festival Valada in Portugal. This tour will also take them to Spain, Italy, France, the UK, Sweden and Denmark.

The Veldt are perhaps the most renowned protégés of Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), apart from Lush, and contemporaries of A.R.Kane. Apart from collaborating with those two artist, they have also worked with TV On The Radio, Mos Def and Lady Miss Kier (Deee-Lite), and have toured and played with The Pixies, Throwing Muses, Echo & The Bunnymen, Cocteau Twins, Manic Street Preachers, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Oasis, Living Colour and TV on the Radio, among others. Most recently they toured East coast dates with The Brian Jonestown Massacre for their U.S. tour.

This will be the first official tour of mainland Europe for the The Veldt in promotion of their new EP ‘The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur’During the Italian leg of the tour, they will tour with Rome-based three-piece WEIRD., one of the foremost shoegaze artists from southern Europe, with support from Lady Sometimes Records. Highlights of this tour include the Reverence Valada Festival, Liverpool Psych Festival, and GataFest Sweden.

The Veldt were a sensation from the start as they became a part of a movement of innovators who came of musical age at a time when rhythmic rebels were reflective, gritty and wild. Their sound inspired future generations of alternative artists, including TV On the Radio.

Before and after leaving Mercury Records, their music was remarkeable in being tastefully loud and exploring color, space, sensuality and beat driven melodies with rhythmic and dynamic tension. Daniel’s falsetto vocals cast a contrast upon the wall of sound created by Danny’s heavy rock dreamscape guitar and Hayato’s pounding and licentious beats.
“The major labels were always trying to get us to change our sound, our look or both,” Daniel laughs. “But, we had no interest in being the next Lenny Kravitz or Tony! Toni! Toné! Unfortunately, not everyone shared our vision. We weren’t trying to be rock stars, we just want to play our music and pay our rent.”
‘The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur’ EP serves to mark the band’s re-emergence after a hiatus and will be followed by their ‘Resurrection Hymns’ LP in early 2017 via SonaBLAST! Records. For these veteran musicians and passionate noise technicians, this newest EP marks a new beginning. The new EP is available on vinyl from Manchester-basedLeonard Skully Records and on CD and digitally athttp://theveldtmusic.bandcamp.com.

After a short summer break and the writing of material for their third album nearly complete, WEIRD. have announced there is a new single on the horizon first, for which they are offering a work-in-progress teaser, a somewhat minimalistic version of the track-to-come. They have also announced they will tour this month, with dates confirmed in various cities in Italy, France and Switzerland, and have just released a new live video of ‘Infinite Decay’ as a taste of what to expect.

During the Italian leg of the tour, they will tour with New York’s legendary shoegaze outfit THE VELDT, key protégés of Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and contemporaries of A.R.Kane. The Veldt will be touring Italy for the first time as part of their wider European tour, in promotion of their new EP ‘The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur’.

With a rich history of touring with the likes of The Jesus and Mary ChainCocteau Twins, and TV on the Radio, they have also played with The Pixies, Echo & The Bunnymen, Throwing Muses, Manic Street Preachers, Oasis, Living Colour and many other cult artists. Most recently they toured with The Brian Jonestown Massacre for their U.S. East coast dates. The Veldt will finally tour Italy thanks to the efforts of Lady Sometimes Records, visiting between dates at several major European festivals (Reverence Festival, Liverpool Psych Festival, and GataFest Sweden).

The release of Weird.’s 2015 album ‘A Long Period of Blindness’ was celebrated with a successful 40-gig tour throughout Italy. The album was met with positive reviews both in Italy and abroad. Thanks to their unique mix of noisy distortion, dreamy melodies and reverb-laden harmonies, the band has been listed among the lead figures of contemporary Italian psych-gaze, along with the likes of Stella Diana, Be Forest, Rev Rev Rev, Brothers in Law, Novanta and Clustersun.
While waiting for the new single to be released, catch the band at one of the following concerts and enjoy their latest videos for ‘Infinite Decay’ and ‘Dead Wax’. A.R.KANE to play On Blackheath Festival Sept. 10

After performances in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Estonia and elsewhere in the UK this summer, including such mainstay indie festivals as Primavera Sound and NOS Primavera Sound, reformed pioneering dream pop outfit A.R.KANE will next be performing at Britain’s On Blackheath Festival on Saturday, September 10, along with Primal Scream, Hot Chip, Róisín Murphy, LoneLady, Rosie Lowe, Neneh Cherry (DJ Set), legendary DJ and BBC host Don Letts, Thundercatand Connan Mockasin

The first to coin the term ‘dream pop’ back in the 1980s, referring to the music they make, A.R.Kane went on to influence everyone from My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive to Andrew Weatherall – whose long-running night A Love From Outer Space derives its name from their seminal 1989 track, and also were an important progenitor of such genres as shoegaze, trip hop, acid house and post-rock.

Last summer, A.R.Kane made several festival appearances with the new line-up featuring original ‘Kaners Rudy and Maggie Tambala, as well as a new member – Andy Taylor. Their festival repertoire for 2016 includes classic A.R.Kane songs, alongside new material. The band kicked off the 2016 touring season by playing Manchester‘s Soup Kitchen – the first time an A.R.Kane line-up has played a non-festival headlining show in 22 years (the last ones were at CBGBs in NYC and at Hammersmith, supporting David Byrne).

“We are still firmly entrenched in dream pop; from psychedelic folk to trip hop, from shoegaze to electronica, dub and experimental noise … we are focused on live performance more than ever before”. Their performance now combines 3 voices, 3 guitars, effects-drenched noise intervals, beats, loops and live synths, creating a fresh space for their structured Dreampop songs.“We have a bunch of new songs and are going to start recording this spring – we’d like to release something soon”.

The band will also be recording new material this year. In the meantime, the band is collaborating with Canadian-Ukrainian dreampop duoUmmagma on several new tracks planned for release in late 2016. Most recently, A.R.Kane worked witih The Veldt to produce ‘And It’s You’ on their new EP ‘The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur’.

East London duo Rudy Tambala and Alex Ayuli originally formed A.R.Kane in 1986, disrupting the UK music scene by combining groove-based music with indie rock. Refusing to being categorized, they coined the descriptor “Dreampop”, with the term being widely adopted by music critics thereafter. Widely recognized as one of the most influential bands of their era, they laid ground for many musical genres that came to dominate the alternative music scene. AllMusic describes A.R.Kane as “the most criminally under-recognized band of their era”. The Guardian calls their work “some of the 80’s most extraordinary music”.

After releasing their debut EP on the One Little Indian label, they moved to 4AD in 1987 and issued the Lollita 12″, produced by Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins. Alex and Rudy later released throughRough Trade and David Byrne’s own label Luaka Bop. During their brief stint on 4AD, A.R.Kane collaborated with label-mates Colourboxto produce the sample-heavy dance track ‘Pump Up The Volume’ under the name M|A|R|R|S. They blew the top off the UK charts, reaching number one – the biggest single to ever have appeared in 4AD’s history to this day.

Recording highlights include A Love from Outer Space, the two albums69 and“i”, and M|A|R|R|S Pump Up The Volume/ANITINA. In 2013, One Little Indian also released a double CD ‘Singles Collection’ to great critical acclaim.

Keep up with A.R.Kane

Recollecting Ride, The Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Chapterhousewith Velvet Underground underpinnings, Bloodhounds love to play loud enough to make your face tingle.

Since releasing their ‘Escape II’ EP via Moon Sounds (USA) and Raphalite Records (UK) in late 2015, the four-piece have received a string of praise from around the world and gone on to play live with virtually every key shoegaze band in Australia.

“I was hearing songs that contained a lot of imagery in them, which were telling stories in the way that is often done in folk music, and that inspired me to write this particular track,” says Bloodhounds frontmanJohnny Green.

“Over The Wall is basically about a prisoner and him wanting to escape, whether he be dead or alive. In the song, he toys with trying his luck in the conventional break-out manner or hoping and even planning how he can die while still inside the walls of his jail. Regardless of the outcome, he will no longer be in prison and will consider it a successful escape,” explains Bloodhounds guitarist Chris Donaldson.

Slated for release on September 16, Bloodhounds On My Trail will once again be releasing ‘Over The Wall’ and their forthcoming EP through Moon Sounds Records, one of America’s most dynamic shoegaze labels and home to such bands as Dead Leaf Echo, Ceremony, The Foreign Resort, Ummagma, The Vandelles, Sounds of Sputnik, Static Daydream, A*Star, Porcupine, and Follow The Sea.
