Hello Casanova – I’ll Be Waiting (Supersonic Media 2016)

Northern Ireland’s Hello Casanova to release debut single via London’s Supersonic Media
London-based Supersonic Media have announced the signing of Northern Ireland-based outfit Hello Casanova for their debut single ‘I’ll Be Waiting’.
Hailing from Armagh in Northern Ireland, Hello Casanova (previously known as Foreign Affairs) create solid edgy anthems with a Celtic hook and large doses of positive pop punk energy. They write sweet and catchy songs about the world they’re living in. Their songs focus on heart, drive and passion for the pop punk genre, with every song conveying meaning drawn from their own real life experiences and issues.
Hello Casanova are Matt Irwin (rhythm guitar and vocals), Ethan Williamson (lead guitar and vocals), and Martin Miller (drums and percussion).
The single, a straight-up but edgy personal love song, was recorded by acclaimed producer Rocky O’Reilly (And So I Watch You From A Far, Fighting With Wire, Bella Union artist exmagician). Apart from an underlying Celtic-melodic guitar riff slightly reminiscent of Big Country, this composition also calls to mind such modern-day bands as Blink 182 and Green Day.
Shot at Wreckless Skatepark in Gorey, Ireland, the accompanying music video captures the live energy of a Hello Casanova show, presented in combination with unique visuals, featuring up-and-coming Irish skaters and bike athletes. Filmed by Jack McNally, Sam Frisby, Chris McEvoy and Rob Cook, the video was edited by Ethan Williamson.
“The music video features people from the age of 6-26, all skating around and having a great time while we perform,” explains Hello Casanova frontman Matthew Irwin. “Pop punk can be cliché. It can be the same three chords over, and it can be all chorus with the rest filler. We set out to try and give pop punk a different angle – to give all the heart that the genre deserves and to add our own spin on the sound”.

Their vast amounts of energy during shows, along with fabulous crowd interaction and passion, have taken them as far as the west coast of the United States. Their live show is a cut above, bringing their infectious mix of Celtic-tinged rock and punk to many.

“I’ll Be Waiting is the happiest song we’ve ever written! As Foreign Affairs, we put out a lot of serious tracks that were political, angry and very serious! Now, as Hello Casanova, we wanted our first track to be a positive burst of energy! This song details our singer Matt’s love for his girlfriend, who he’s been with for five years! We wanted it to be catchy, anthemic and have heart and we’re over the moon with the results! We’re currently heading to the studio to record our next single which we’re also very very proud of,” says guitarist Ethan Williamson.

As of November 18, this single will be released through online retail and streaming platforms internationally via Supersonic Media.

Daniel Land – In Love With A Ghost (2016)

Daniel Land announces solo album, previews first single ‘New York Boogie-Woogie’

After a three year hiatus, Daniel Land has announced the forthcoming release of his ‘In Love With a Ghost’ LP, undoubtedly his most complicated and textured record to date. This album follows albums ‘Love Songs For The Chemical Generation’ and ‘The Space Between Us’ by Daniel Land & The Modern Painters. It was recorded over the three years following that group’s disbanding, at a time when he seriously considered giving up making music. The first single from this release is ‘New York Boogie-Woogie’, along with a video based on footage Daniel Land himself filmed in New York.
Daniel Land explains, “This is an album about cities. It is an album about reinvention, and starting your life over. It is an album about growing up, finding love, and settling down. And to a lesser degree, it is about the damage that can be done to a person, or a family, by falling in love with the wrong person. With ‘In Love With A Ghost’, I came full circle for a while by incorporating a whole bunch of influences that pre-date my love of dream-pop and shoegaze. I really wanted to make a colourful, widescreen, detailed record. When I started the album, I didn’t have a live band, and most of the tracks were written on the piano, for my own amusement, rather than for a group with three guitarists.”
Daniel suffered a series of health issues midway through making the album, including a chronic inner-ear infection that left him partially deaf for over a year and also prone to bouts of dizziness.

“Unable to make music, and living in a new city made me feel, at times, powerfully depressed. This became a crisis of confidence that went very deep and it did seem, for a while, that I would never find my way back to making music again. Finishing the album was a process that involved re-evaluating my life and overhauling my relationship to music, and coming out of the other side more healthy, more humble, and more grateful. It’s good to be back again,” says Daniel.

The album was recorded at various locations including London, Manchester, Devon, California, and New York. It features nearly twenty musicians including members of Daniel Land & The Modern Painters, Andrew Saks (Sway/ASAKS), Gerard Hopes (Little Nova Sound), and members of Daniel’s new live band. The record involved the prolific ambient composer Brin Coleman, a.k.a. Bing Satellites, who was involved with the record from start to finish, playing multiple instruments, helping with production, and even co-writing some of the music.

Daniel Land has been releasing dream-pop and ambient music for nearly a decade, having developed a unique blend of dreamgaze and confessional song writing. Drowned in Sound said that the first album ‘Love Songs For The Chemical Generation’ is “one of the finest records of its time”, while NME says the single “Within The Boundaries” was “like Slowdive reimagined by Phil Spector”.

Daniel also releases atmospheric landscape music under the name riverrun. He has collaborated with German electronica genius Ulrich Schnauss, in part through his membership in dream-pop supergroup Engineers at the time of their third album ‘In Praise of More’. He has also collaborated with such artists as The Steals, Bing Satellites, and Ask For Joy.
Lauded by BBC’s Guy Garvey, Marc Radliffe, Tom Robinson, and many others, he makes the kind of music that Rob Da Bank of BBC Radio 1 also commends, saying “You can’t help think the late John Peel would have loved”.
Daniel Land’s ‘In Love With a Ghost’ LP will be released on November 25 via Bandcamp and the usual online retailers.

Bloodhounds On My Trail – ‘Places Like This’ from ‘Haunted Isles’ EP (Moon Sounds Records 2016)

Bloodhounds On My Trail Present Single ‘Places Like This’, Announce ‘Haunted Isles’ EP
Among a proud set of musical noise makers that have fostered a burgeoning shoegaze scene in Australia over the past few years is Melbourne outfit Bloodhound On My Trail.  Following a wave of accolades for their single ‘Over The Wall’, the band has announced they will release their ‘Haunted Isles’ EP on November 18, preceded by the single ‘Places Like This’.
Bloodhounds are Johnny Green (guitar, vocals), Chris Donaldson(guitar), Nik Donaldson (drums) and Ché Walden (bass). Producing music that brings to mind and heart such bands as Ride, The Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Chapterhouse, Bloodhounds On My Trail have developed a solid following among connaisseurs of bliss, densely-drenched and atmospheric guitar tones.

Since releasing their ‘Escape II’ EP via Moon Sounds (USA) and Raphalite Records (UK) in late 2015, the four-piece have received a string of praise from around the world and gone on to play live with virtually every key shoegaze band in Australia.

About the first single ‘Over the Wall, Bloodhounds frontman Johnny Green says: “I was hearing songs that contained a lot of imagery in them, which were telling stories in the way that is often done in folk music, and that inspired me to write this particular track”.

“Over The Wall is about a prisoner wanting to escape, whether he be dead or alive. He toys with trying his luck in the conventional break-out manner or hoping and even planning how he can die while still inside the walls of his jail. Regardless of the outcome, he will no longer be in prison and will consider it a successful escape,” explains Bloodhounds guitaristChris Donaldson. “Our song ‘Places Like This’ is about being thankful to get out of a place that you once lived after returning to it years later”.
Bloodhounds On My Trail will once again release the ‘Haunted Isles’ EP through Moon Sounds Records, one of America’s most dynamic shoegaze labels and home to such bands as Ceremony, The Foreign Resort, Deaf Leaf Echo, Ummagma, The Vandelles, Sounds of Sputnik, Static Daydream, A*Star, Porcupine, and Follow The Sea.
THE CREW – Johnny Green (Vocals / Guitars), Nik Donaldson (Drums), Chris Donaldson (Guitars), Che Walden (Bass). Annemarie Duff (Vocals on ‘Words Like Weapons’). Produced by Steve Melville & BOMT. Mixed/Mastered by Steve Melville at Salt Studios. Drums engineered by Neil Thompson at Head Gap Studios. Recorded & engineered by CM Donaldson. Artwork by Jonny O’Hara.

Klammer – Everything Depends Upon The King (Curious Fox Records 2016)

Post Punk influenced but forward looking band Klammer released the single “Everything Depends Upon The King” on 7″ vinyl on Curious Fox Records on Sept 5th, which will be exclusively available from Rough Trade shops. The track is taken from their eponymous 2nd album Klammer, which is available on Under Dogz Records.

Klammer 7 Single

“Everything Depends Upon The King” is a fast paced post Punk track made to be an instant hit.
Steve Lamacq has played the single several times on his BBC 6 Music show.

The Leeds based quartet put a contemporary twist on the post-punk attitude. Although there’s plenty of hooks in their songs, there’s a dark and edgy broodiness coursing through the sound of the band.

Klammer – Jordan Stead (Bass Guitar), Paul “Poss” Strickland (Vocals/Guitar), Steve Whitfield (Guitar/Vocals) – came to life in 2014, drawing from the members’ shared love for all things angular, dark, loud and melodic.

Their first album, “Auslane” came out in 2015 and was re-released along with “Klammer” in 2016 by West Yorkshire based record label Under Dogz Records.

They’ve shared stages with the likes of Richie Ramone, The Membranes, Art Brut, Department S and 999.

The band have just played to a sell out crowd at 100 Club in London with Penetration and will be out touring the UK and Ireland with Richie Ramone and his band through Nov and Dec ’16.

TheUse feat. Rachel Mason & Black Saturn – On My Deathbed / Journey to Truth (Aagoo Records 2016)

TheUse 7″ Single Commemorates Life and Poetry of Chinese Factory Worker Xu Lizhi

Aagoo Records has announced they will release a 7″ single from producer/composer TheUse, the solo project of Michael Durek. The lead track ‘On My Deathbed’ is a dark but upbeat composition. Renowned artist Rachel Mason lends haunting vocals set to the English translation of poetry by Xu Lizhi, the FoxConn worker from China who jumped to his death, leaving behind a secret archive of poetry, underlining the hardships and despair faced by Chinee migrant workers. His powerful words are part of the global wake-up call about the hazards of the electronics industry and his story has made international news, underlined by TIME Magazine‘s infamous ‘The Poet Who Died For Your Phone’.

This song will feature in the documentary ‘Who Pays The Price? The Human Cost of Electronics’. Four years in the making with 1.2 million YouTube trailer views, this focuses on a Chinese activist with leukemia who is helping young workers poisoned on electronics assembly lines.Heather White, the film’s director, says “Xu Lizhi’s poems underline the alienation and despair felt by those trapped in a dead-end existence, where work is the only measure of one’s daily experience.”
“When Rachel brought Xu Lizhi’s words to my instrumental track, it just felt right, and the melody she wrote is gorgeous. I just wanted to cry right there in the studio when she tracked it. The poem by itself is really sad, but through this music, it becomes powerful and transcendent,” saysMichael Durek.

Rachel Mason said: “Xu Lizhi’s poetry just really sung themselves to me, and miraculously matched the songs that Michael was crafting. Some poems just seem to have a melody built into them and you can hear it.” An adept lyricist herself, Mason has previously set the words of political dictators to music and collaborated with artists such as Josephine Foster, to imagine the minds of political leaders in her two albums ‘The Ambassadors’.

The video for this focuses on the Occupy Wall Street protests, underlining the global disconnect between haves and have-nots. A dancing spirit-like character internalizes the protest sentiment, representing the restless human soul’s need to escape.

The flip side is ‘Journey to Truth feat. Black Saturn and Charvak R. Jagtap’. Black Saturn provides lyrics that mention divine intervention, question historical facts, and are full of flowery imagery. A bright upbeat piano sound is surrounded by organic pulsing synths, shifting drum breaks, and a heavy 4/4 beat. Charvak R. Jagtap, a classical tabla player based in Thane, India, adds a psychedelic eastern percussion vibe to the mix. The music combines Black Saturn’s word-poetry and Charvak’s authentic tabla with the signature theremin, keyboards, and production of TheUse.
Michael Durek says: “Ned Jackson aka Black Saturn is a fountain of lyrical ideas, and you can tell he speaks of things he really thinks about on a personal level – he puts it all out there. I was moved to tears when I first heard his track ‘Minor Affliction’. He’s one of my favorite folks to work with. He has a special gift of being inspirational without being cheesy or cliche.”
TheUse is recognized for his soulful theremin playing and imaginative, moody electronic productions. His music incorporates elements of techno, classical, jazz, hip-hop, electro, industrial, and even psych pop, making use of custom instruments, recorded samples, and theremin. Recent coverage includes the ‘Symantix’ premiere in The Wire Magazine and also Huffington Post. He has toured through Europe, the USA and Canada and his production or playing is  featured on over 40 albums. TheUse has produced an official remix for Cibo Matto and, among others, has collaborated with Danny Chavis of The Veldt, Sam Hillmer of Zs, and Jeanann Dara, who has performed with Bjork on numerous occasions.
The ‘On My Deathbed’ single will be released on 7″ vinyl via New Jersey-based Aagoo Records, who has also released vinyl from Xiu Xiu, Lucky Dragons, Philippe Petit and more. This record was mastered by Philippe Gerber at All Real Sound, with cover art by Bas Mantel. Net profits from ‘On My Deathbed’ will be donated to China Labor Watch, a 501(c)(3) organization based in New York City that works to improve labor conditions in China. The singles and 7″ vinyl can be ordered at

“On My Deathbed”
I want to take another look at the ocean,
behold the vastness of tears from half a lifetime
I want to climb another mountain,
try to call back the soul that I’ve lost
I want to touch the sky, feel that blueness so light
But I can’t do any of this, so I’m leaving this world
Everyone who’s heard of me
Shouldn’t be surprised at my leaving
Even less should you sigh or grieve
I was fine when I came, and fine when I left.

Dalton Deschain & The Traveling Show – ‘Roberta’ EP (2016)

Dalton Deschain & The Traveling Show preview new ‘Roberta’ EP with animated chapbook

Colorful NYC circus punk antifolk outfit Dalton Deschain & The Traveling Show will be releasing their forthcoming ‘Roberta’ EP, based around a circus-inspired tale and accompanied by a 30+ page animated chapbook about the circus character Roberta, written by Dalton Deschain himself, along with album credits, lyrics, and illustrations and music video stills by the band’s bassist and video animator David Warpaint. The download for the EP will also include an ebook and PDF copy of the book.
Ahead of the EP’s October 28 release date, the band has released their highly colourful burning single ‘Freakshow’, along with an interesting new video, featuring a mixture of animation with live footage.

This is the latest entry in the band’s ongoing horror-punk-antifolk saga about demon possession, circuses, and nuclear warfare. The ‘Roberta’ EP tells the story of a transwoman living in the 1940s, who finds love with a stagehand for a traveling sideshow. The band’s sound falls in suit with several other punk cabaret outfits such as Dresden Dolls, The Tiger Lillies, Vermillion Lies and Mardi Gras style gypsy fusion actThe Urban Voodoo Machine. The opening track and single ‘Freakshow’ is an anthem of defiance with aggressive vocals shouted over distorted bass and a heavy dance beat. This then transitions to ‘Different Constellations’, a softer B-side, performing as a guitar-and-accordion-based duet between vocalistsDalton Deschain and Jo Kroger.

“The idea for Freakshow came to me last fall when I was doing a lot of listening to the Talking Heads and the Cramps.  I started wondering if there was a way to combine the groove-based writing of the Talking Heads with the dark, atmospheric horrorshow sound of the Cramps, and then I threw that all in a blender with a circus calliope, and what came out was Freakshow,” explains Dalton Deschain.
“Lyrically, I had been doing a lot of reflecting on how the bands that meant the most to me growing up were bands that wrote songs about empowering the listener, not about themselves.  A lot of those bands are responsible for me having the courage to follow music in the first place and leaving the Midwest.  There’s 10 million songs already made to empower people like me, but Freakshow is made for the people that don’t have a lot of songs written about them, that don’t always get representation and encouragement, and write a song to tell them that they’re so much stronger than our culture tells them they are.”

Following ‘The Collateral Vignettes’ EP released in 2014, this new EP highlights the band’s flair for the dramatic, as well as their ability to create catchy melodies in a variety of genres.

‘Roberta’ is the first in a series of three EPs that will each be accompanied by a chapbook of stories and illustrations by the band, which each contribution to this series focusing on a different character in the band’s ongoing musical narrative. Each copy contains a download code, a short story written by Deschain himself, lyrics, and illustrations by David Warpaint.

Dalton Deschain & The Traveling Show are a time-traveling, universe-hopping collective of musicians, nuclear techs, and carnival freaks, who have been performing art-theater-circus-punk events in NYC and Detroit areas since 1947. They weave a complex sci-fi/ horror story into an ever-expanding set of catchy and intricately composed songs, ranging stylistically from furious punk to beautiful spacey ballads.

The band has grown a cult following locally through their off-kilter shows, including their annual Devil’s Night party and a recent performance, where they covered the entirety of Hedwig & The Angry Inch to a sold-out crowd in Brooklyn. Hooks, dance beats, ugly riffs, and sci-fi lyrics promise a show and a listening experience that is wholly unique and infectious.

New Model Army -Winter

There is only a handful of bands with the gift of adapting to the constantly changing musical environments but still keeping their unique identity. New Model Army is one of them and have proven that ability during the whole course of their fourteen albums.

“Winter” finds the band from Bradford in unhurried vibes not very different than “Between Dog And Wolf” yet more creepy and powerful as a score for a post-apocalypse film. In the opening track “Beginning” they disembark the mother ship and continue with atmospheric but heavy soundscapes such as “Burn The Castle” or the bowieish “Echo November”. And yes, there’s some good old folk in “Winter” and “Die Trying”. Again, political to the core; New Model Army will spread the militant sparkle till the end of time and beyond. And this is a feature known by their fans and respected by the rest (of the wicked…).
