The Veldt – In a Quiet Room (Leonard Skully Records 9 December 2016)

Shoegaze Pioneers The Veldt Release ‘In a Quiet Room’ with New Video from Tokyo

NYC-Raleigh four-piece The Veldt have released a new video for ‘In a Quiet Room’, created by Tokyo-based videographer Toshikazu Kaneiwa. This track comes from their five-track EP ‘The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur’, released via Manchester label Leonard Skully Records.

With 4AD legendary recording artist A.R.Kane contributing production on this EP, it effectively merges the alternative bliss rock sound The Veldt has become known for with the hallmark dreamy electronica that led to A.R.Kane becoming famed as ‘father of dreampop’. These tracks combine intense energy, layers of atmosphere and guitar with beautiful falsetto vocals.

The Veldt are identical twins Daniel (guitar, vocals) and Danny Chavis (guitar), Hayato Nakao (bass) and Marvin Levi (drums).  Upon signing to Capitol Records in 1989, they recorded a debut album with Cocteau Twins dream-gaze guru Robin Guthrie, which was never released, and then recorded a new once, called ‘Marigolds’, with Lincoln Fong (Moose).

After switching labels, Mercury Records released ‘Afrodisiac’ in 1994, produced by Ray Shulman (The Sundays, Bjork, Sugarcubes), before changing their name to Apollo Heights (they have since changed it back to The Veldt). Earlier this month, Pitchfork included this album in their top 50 shoegaze albums of all time, calling this “the great lost American shoegaze classic, with influences from Prince to Cocteau Twins to A.R. Kane to the Jesus and Mary Chain (who contributed a remix) fused into something beautiful and unique”.

Video producer Toshikazu Kaneiwa is an indie filmmaker hailing from Tokyo, Japan. A long-time friend of the band, their support for each other’s art has been mutually complementary. Veldt bassist Hayato Nakao composed music for some of Toshikazu’s short films, including “Believe” and “Surface”, while he would offer his skills in photography and creating videos for the band (then Apollo Heights). “They guided my soul when I was in NYC in 2001-2014,” explains Toshikazu.

“I was truly inspired when I heard ‘In a Quiet Room’. This sound is so beautiful and sad, and I felt compelled to do the visual work for this song,” explains Toshikazu Kaneiwa. “At the same time, I met k.a.n.a., who is an artist with so much talent – she can dance, act, paint and sing… and I got an idea for the video and I told her my directional plan. She said yes. I really appreciate that she brought a very strong performance into this video.”

The Veldt were part of a movement of innovators who came of musical age at a time when rhythmic rebels were reflective, gritty and wild. Their sound inspired many alternative artists, including TV On the Radio, and led to them working together. They’ve also collaborated with Mos Defand Lady Miss Kier (Deee-Lite), and have toured and played with The Pixies, Throwing Muses, Echo & The Bunnymen, Cocteau Twins, Manic Street Preachers, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Oasis, Living Colour, and most recently with The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

‘The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur’ EP marks the band’s re-emergence after a notable hiatus, going down in history as one of the most memorable shoegaze comebacks in 2016, as demonstrated by their recent North American and European tours. In early 2017, The Veldt will release new music through SonaBLAST! Records. The new EP is available on vinyl from Manchester-based Leonard Skully Records and on CD and digitally at http://theveldtmusic.bandcamp.com.

Last Dusk – Memento Mori (2016)

last-dusk

(by Fondas SumerSon)

A few years ago not many people would have thought that Costa Rica would be the home of great goth rock bands. However Draconian Incubus from San Jose changed this. The band left its mark on the scene with its dark and powerful goth rock, through its 3 releases (2 full length albums & one ep). However, as years passed by, they had a change in their musical direction, leaving their goth endeavors in order to explore new musical terrains. But this is exactly what gave birth to Last Dusk. Carfax, one of their founding members, decided to follow the path of his heart and remain devoted to what he loved the most in music: Gothic rock! Old school, post-punkish, often occult-themed goth rock, unaffected by commercial trends, to be precise.

Last Dusk started their dark trip around 2012, with the release of their debut ep “Trismegistus”, which made many people pay attention to them. The highlight of its impact was their cracking appearance in Sacrosanct festival, one of the most cult festivals in Europe, taking place yearly in Reading-UK!

After some line-up changes Last Dusk’s new offering, their first full-length album “memento mori”, is finally here! With this release the band proves that they have no reason to be envious of any well established European goth rock/dark wave act! Old school guitars and bass lines, strong dark wave drumming, rich keyboard layers and synth-choirs and imposing goth vocals with a wide range of influences from Love Like Blood and House of Usher to Bauhaus and Christian Death or even Cinema Strange. The album will appeal equally to fans of traditional goth rock, as well as lovers of post punk and dark wave.

The songs vary from goth rock anthems (The Broken Altar, The Fool, Oblivion) and mystical ritualistic songs (The devil’s flower) to cobweb-covered batcave tunes (Memento Mori). The new versions of “Evocation” and “The Outsider” are indeed upgraded, sounding fresh now with more keyboards. Special tip: The closing track of the album “There’s a thing in the garden….” is a Crowley-inspired, hypnotic occult diamond! A narration of thelemic inspiration in Greek is used as an intro, while Aleister Crowley reciting verses from “the Poet” serves as the song’s outro. This should be enough to help you understand the atmosphere that the band creates in this dark hymn. What a track!

Production wise the sound might slightly lack in strength and clarity, but this is probably done deliberately by the band who rather prefers a retro dark wave sound which serves their purpose right, at the end of the day.

I suggest you check out this band because they have a lot to offer. Their devotion to goth and the culture that has built around it, is not something you come across very often. Long Live the Goth Underground Long Live Last Dusk!

SpaceFest! 2016 – 2-3 December 2016

SpaceFest! 2016 Preview. Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) & Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh) to lead Pure Phase Ensemble 6

spacefest-2016-poster-hi-res

SpaceFest! is gearing up for a new season. The sixth edition of this festival will take place on December 2-3. Gdansk will again become the intergalactic capital of Poland, presenting psychedelic music at its best with shoegaze, Krautrock and space-rock plus cosmic energy, intergalactic cats, forest goblins, psyched visuals, pagan disco and more.

Organized by Nasiono Records, this event is traditionally preceded by a week-long workshop for Pure Phase Ensemble, an ephemeral group created especially for the festival. While most festival events will take place at Zak Club, these musicians will rehearse at the Laznia 2 Centre for Contemporary Art in the city’s Nowy Port district, seeking inspiration amidst its post-industrial atmosphere.

anton-newcombeThis year, Pure Phase Ensemble will be fronted by a true legend: Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, espousing one rule – that there are no rules when making music. We can basically expect anything. Anton is teaming up with Emil Nikolaisen (producer, multi-instrumentalist and frontman of Serena Maneesh) for this project.

Anton Newcombe says, “It is my hope I can have a quick chat with everyone involved and get on the same page about how important silence can be. From there we can make everyone deaf… but I’m not interested in throwing everything at something then trying to remove everything in its own way. I would rather build wonderful beds of ideas, rythm, melody and work on Polish and English vocals when we can… I plan to switch between my keys and my guitars using one in open tunings if I can, and one standard… and get weirder… be heavy. and dreamy. but not pointless.”

Other PPE members are from the following Polish alternative bands: Polpo Motel (Olga Myslowska), Jesien (Maciej Karminski), Oslo Kill City (Jakub Zwirello), Judy’s Funeral (Marcin Lewandowski) and Aiodine (Kacper Graczyk). The collective will also involve Nasiono Records’ very own Karol Schwarz (7faz, KSAS), who has been responsible for its musical cohesion from the very outset. Their output will be presented live on December 3, and will be recorded and released on CD in 2017.

The makeup of Pure Phase Ensemble is constantly changing, guided by the artistic vision of a new leader each year. Through workshop improvisation, the musicians produce a set of unique songs, Past participants include Mark Gardener (Ride), Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Ray Dickaty (ex Spiritualized), Steve Hewitt (ex Placebo), Jaime Harding (Marion), Chris Olley (Six By Seven), and Hugo Race (The Bad Seeds, The True Spirit).

This year’s concert delights include performances by Camera (Germany), Be Forest (Italy), The Third Sound (Iceland-Germany), DIV i DED (Czech Republic), MDME SPKR (Britain), and Polish artists Rosa VertovWild BooksLonker See, and The Fruitcakes.

Be Forest, a trio from the Italian city of Pesaro and leading fixture in the modern shoegaze world, bring their hallmark sound to the festival. More shoegaze is on the menu from Czech shoegaze and dreampop outfit DIV I DED, building on the achievements of such groups as Ecstasy of Saint Theresa, Slowdive, Jesus & Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine.

German trio Camera, who experiment with sound, composition, form and expression, are justifiably compared with 70s Krautrock icons like Neu! and La

Düsseldorf, their music like a motor running at full throttle, where an explosion could occur any second.

The new psych scene is represented by The Third Sound, a band that has been dubbed “linchpins of the psychedelic underground”. Fronted by Icelandic singer Hakon Aðalsteinsson, formerly of Singapore Sling, this project was founded in Rome and has since relocated to Berlin.

London duo MDME SPKR transmit pure, raw energy on stage, while Lau Betti’s low, in-your-face voice emanates sincerity and freshness. Their sweaty, loud sound evokes L7’s grunge or the darkness of Black Sabbath. Polish band Wild Books also combine the raw sound of psychedelic punk with dreamy, fuzzy 1990s-style guitars, presenting material from their upcoming second album titled “2”.

The sound from Poland’s Lonker See oscillates around jazz, space rock and psych. It’s full of space, based on long forms, with ample room for improvisation. Through its annual competition for young bands, two other collectives will perform at SpaceFest! 2016 – Warsaw-based Rosa Vertov, an all-female band playing dirty, disturbing shoegaze, and The Fruitcakes, whose music is inspired by the late 60s San Francisco psych scene, the Canterbury scene, and the psychedelic aspects of the contemporary Australian scene.

SpaceFest! also presents DJ sets from UK-based DJ Ola’s Kool Kitchen and DJ Pomponette, who will deliver spaced out and psychedelic dance music sets, and Snowid – a mystical forest creature and the festival’s informal patron, presenting a wild mix of disco, psytrance, electro and dubstep.

SpaceFest! is organised by the Nasiono Association in cooperation with the Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art and Zak Club. The festival is co-financed by the City of Gdansk. Tickets are available from Soundrive Tickets and Zak Club(Grunwaldzka 195/197, Gdansk)

Day tickets are PLN 35 (preorder) and PLN 45 (on the door) / Weekend tickets are PLN 65 (preorder only). For more information on this unique space expedition, visit www.spacefest.pl

NU:N – Naked until Noema (2016)

(By Fondas Sumerson)

It’s no big secret that Portugal had nothing exceptional to offer the Goth scene all these years, apart from Phantom Vision and Aenima. At least this was the case before these guys appeared. With their self-titled debut, the band established its name in the European goth community and with their cracking live performances in their own country, UK (sacrosanct fest) and Spain (Semana Gotica de Madrid) they captured the attention of goth fans everywhere.

nun

Two years after their excellent debut, they return with a second album, sounding more mature and eager to explore new musical highways, not straying from the path of traditional goth rock nevertheless ! Everything the listener had loved in their first release is also apparent in the new album… Powerful, solid guitar riffs, haunting deep vocals, dance-floor rhythms, atmospheric synth-lines, obscure electronics and a touch of industrial guitar-playing. If you add to this 3 very special guests who contribute to the album, it’s not hard to imagine that this is bound to be one of the best releases of the year…. But let’s take a closer look to “naked until noema”.

The album begins with the mystical “aethyr”, a song that takes us to ancient Egypt, through the invocation of the chosen ones and the everlasting search for light. This is a ritualistic tune with eerie guitars and an atmospheric chorus that will remind you of the early days of Garden of Delight! The participation of Carfax from Last Dusk gives the song a wicked twist, which adds to the occult atmosphere that the band masterfully creates!

The next song is the first single of the album. “Ceremonial” is made for the dance-floor. A classic goth rock anthem, intense and melodic, reminiscent of the German underground goth heroes Morbid Poetry. Killer rhythm section on this track which is themed after Sumerian goddesses and legends!
Seeds of Absence” which follows is my favourite. I first listened to this song at Sacrosanct festrival last year and I was shocked! We’re talking about a mid-tempo tune with great bass lines and out-of-this world synths, that will surly capture you from the very first listen! The song offers a variety in rhythm, while its chorus is utterly beautiful. Absolutely amazing tune!
In “untitled” we have another guest appearance. Stephanie, the girl behind the drum kit of Last Dusk, performs a ghost-like narration in Spanish that works just perfect in the song!
Romeo without Juliet” reveals a more sensitive side of the band. It is inspired by the dramatic “Elephant Man”. A lost, abandoned soul travels around the world as part of a freakshow, away from his true love that haunts his soul eternally. This is a unique song with traditional Spanish guitars and ethnic melodies, weaving a bittersweet goth romance!

Next one is “Suplica”. In this one the band attempts to explore new musical grounds. Imagine Die Krupps trying to sound “goth”. Heavy industrial guitars combined with Nosferatu-like (legendary UK goth rock band) keyboards and a Rammstein-like epic chorus! Quite unexpected from a band like NU:N I would say, but still I really liked this odd experiment of theirs. It definitely worked out fine! José Luis Peixoto, the acclaimed Portuguese novelist and poet is responsible for the lyrics on this one.

Next on “Incessant Lies”, the second dance-floor dynamite of the album. A Sisters of Mecry/Star Industry-like tune with bombastic rhythm section. Melodic synths and high class vocals complete another excellent song that will satisfy all the goth fans that can appreciate a good song they can dance to!
We slow down a little bit to take a stroll down the romantic alleys of “Hidden Praise”, which is a beautiful poem! M.T.’s recites for 1:23 without music…. His voice reminded me of A.Veljanov of Deine Lakaien in this one!
The song that follows is maybe the highlight of the album! It is the band’s co-operation with Oliver Heuer, frontman of German Goth Rockers Sweet William. He is the guest vocalist and lyric writer for this masterpiece! An old school goth rock anthem that took me back to the 90’s. Intricate guitar melodies from another era and amazing vocals by Mr. Heuer…. An impressive tune with a “heavy” subject (loss and the difficulty to go on without your beloved).

Carved Silence” is another mid-tempo song which is featured on their “Ceremonial” digital single as well. Great melody once again. Classic “clean” goth guitars just like Love Like Blood and Garden of Delight used to play them!

Green Hour Glides” is the album’s closing track, a fine opportunity for a bit of experimentation once again. This is a pure dark wave song with an excellent bass line and Clan of Xymox-like guitars. Just Amazing!
Wrapping up this little overview of “naked until noema”, I have to say that I am thrilled that NU:N have returned in such a spectacular way. This is a band that came out of nowhere to revive the glorious days of goth rock! It’s so good to have them back.

The Wedding Present – Going, Going… (HHBTM 18 November 2016)

The Wedding Present to Release ‘Going, Going…’ LP via Athens-based HHBTM Records.

the-wedding-present-going-going-cover

Going, Going…is the title of the widely anticipated ninth studio album from UK indie darlings The Wedding Present but, in typical Wedding Present fashion… it’s not a conventional release! Going, Going… is out November 18th in North America on HHBTM Records, the album tells the story of a road trip across the USA, revealed across a collection of twenty ‘linked’ songs, each with an accompanying short film.

They needed to stretch out; they needed the space. Going, Going…  is the first double album in The Wedding Present’s long glorious career and it opens with four haunting instrumentals, as if David Gedge has been stunned into silence and is slowly working up the courage to speak, like when your loved one asks you what’s wrong and all you can manage to do is slowly shake your head. Finally, he collects himself and explodes into ‘Two Bridges’, and even then he’s only able to leave a voicemail message—he probably made sure to call when he knew she couldn’t answer.

Formed in 1985, The Wedding Present are one of the UK’s most longstanding and much-loved indie bands with eighteen UK Top 40 hit singles to their name. The Fall’s Mark E. Smith, in his northern-ness, his cantankerousness, is one of the few peers who can match David Gedge’s longevity, but Smith drifted into schtick years ago and has never made a record as open-hearted as this.

The album tells the story of a road trip across the US—or more accurately, the accumulation of thoughts collected during a road trip—over the course of 20 songs, each with its own accompanying short film. The music is literally cinematic, in many cases written while looking at photographs & film recorded during the journey.

Road trips allow the mind to drift. They give you time to think. And Going, Going…  is more contemplative, more spiritual than anything they’ve ever done. If The Wedding Present have always been heard as a hyperactive frenzy, a torrent of emotion, Going, Going… is where they take a moment to reflect. And what they’ve ended up finding is even more terrifying. Adolescent dread is intense, but it’s the dread that comes w/middle-age that hits the deepest—the knowledge that monsters are real, and death isn’t a tragedy—that it’s as natural as the weather and every bit as inevitable.

The lyrics are still as incisive (incisive as in creating an incision) as ever. Gedge points fingers everywhere—at himself & everyone in the room. Going, Going… is an album that sounds like it was made under great psychological distress, like if these songs didn’t get written then there might never be any more songs ever. The album’s theme gets clearly laid-out on ‘Fordland.’ I’m crossing time zones like it’s going out of style / Pretending that I know / Exactly what I’m doing with my life, meanwhile / I’m terrified of tomorrow.

The album propels from one bittersweet rush to another. There’s the hyperactive ‘Secretary’, the brutal irony in the chorus of ‘KIll Devil Hills’ as our protagonist, after nearly half an album of equivocations & self-doubt, describes himself as ‘a man who knows what he wants.’

It all builds to the epic finale of ‘Santa Monica’, from Maine all the way to California, from emotional desolation to a cautiously optimistic ending. As the singing ends and the guitars swell, swept away on several minutes of instrumental calm, it feels as if we’ve come full-circle, only now the wordlessness is the product of satisfaction. The album title hints that this could be the end, and if so, what a lovely way to say goodbye.

Released in the UK two months ago on Scopitones, HHBTM is handling the US release, which comes out this November . The UK press is raving, and soon so won’t we all.

The Wedding Present are excited to announce a 13-date tour of North America where they will be supported by fabulous indie pop star Colleen Green. Live dates are as follows.

A Tree Grows – Wau Wau Water (Rufftone Records 25 November 2016)

A Tree Grows Delivers Sublime Jazz-Laced Fusion With New ‘Wau Wau Water’ single.

ATG_WWW01

In advance of announcing their debut album through Rufftone Records, Brooklyn-based A Tree Grows present ‘Wau Wau Water, the first single from their self-titled debut EP. Involving some of the most talented musicians on the New York scene, they create a unique stew with jazz at its core, blended with afrobeat, rock and experimental sounds.
Each composition on this coming LP surrounds a difference concept, describing a distinct state in the evolution of life on earth. The images are snapshots, extending from the beginning of life to the emergence of emotions, to aspects of modern human life. The cycle closes with possibilities for future development: self perpetuating intelligence. The composition Wau Wau Water is based on the following concept: “Enzymes are forming in a prehistoric ocean – evolving into bacteria. A stew of life is brewing, the cycle starts and intensifies in this patch of fertile Wau Wau Water.”
“Defining and discussing these concepts during the rehearsal and recording process created a sense of purpose among the musicians and a deeper engagement with the compositions. This has transformed our creative process,” explains Emanuel Ruffler.
The accompanying video was created by acclaimed videographer Hideki Shiota, who has received the Best Cinematography Award at the Asian American International Film Festival.
A Tree Grows creates instrumental jazz-core music that tastefully crosses stylistic barriers. This unique collaboration involves two brothers – Rashaan Carter and Russell Carter – and German-born electronic musician Emanuel Ruffler. Together, they create sonic textures, over which Tivon Penicott and Duane Eubanks stretch a layer of raw, emotional jazz lines. Not afraid to defy expectations of style, instrumentation and expression, the unique style of each member of A Tree Grows makes for a potent sonic concoction that is refreshing, insightful, and deliciously exciting.
At the top of today’s young saxophone world, Tivon Pennicott brings fantastic rhythm, tasteful melodic lines and the deeply important groove. A two-time Grammy winner and runner-up in the prestigious Thelonius Monk Competition, he is also a prominent part of jazz-soul singer Gregory Porter‘s band. Arguably one of the decade’s most celebrated and genre-crossing artists, in the last few years, Gregory Porter performances have featured Tivon Pennicott on countless live and TV appearances across the globe. Hailing fron Georgia, Tivon began playing with guitar legend Kenny Burrell while still in college, performing at many of the world’s greatest venues alongside the likes of Stevie Wonder and Wynton Marsalis. Since moving to New York in 2009, he has collaborated with numerous artists, appeared on Esperanza Spalding‘s crossover success “Radio Music Society”, and toured with master drummer Al Foster, best known for his long-term collaboration with Miles Davis.
Emanuel Ruffler, a New York resident of more than 20 years, also comes with a colorful musical pedigree. After taking grand prize in the Thelonious Monk Competition, he has achieved songwriting credit on Me’shell Ndegocello’s ‘Aquarium’ and also collaborated with world-famous designer Emanuel Ungaro, which ultimately led to Ruffler soundtracking an ad for an Ungaro-produced perfume.
Rashaan and Russell Carter‘s love of music fostered by their saxophonist father and mother, a radio programmer. The bass ultimately became the voice for Rashaan’s musical expression with Russell on drums. They cut their teeth on the local Washington, D.C. scene with artists such as as Gary Thomas and after Rashaan moved to New York City to attend the New School University, he quickly began working with many faculty members, including percussionist and composer Joe Chambers. Rashaan met future bandmate Emanuel Ruffler at that time.
Trumpeter Duane Eubanks has performed everywhere from the Hollywood Bowl to Carnegie Hall to the Kennedy Center, in addition to Europe and Japan.  He is a member of Dave Holland’s two time Grammy Award winning big band and the late Mulgrew Miller‘s band, Wingspan. Having played with dozens of renowned figures in the jazz world, he has crossed over into other genres, recording and touring with The Temptations, Alicia Keys, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Wu Tang Clan, Freedom Williams, Kirk Franklin, and Defunkt.
“It’s inspiring to play in the company of such amazing work. The studio is this incubator for creative energy and it’s nice to absorb that. The space plays an important role in a concert and one that houses and spawns creative work is always welcome.” says bassist Rashaan Carter.
Rufftone Records releases A Tree Grows ‘Wau Wau Water’ on November 4 via Bandcamp and the usual online retailers.

Chore – The Coastaline Fire LP (Label Obscura 2016)

Label Obscura to Release Chore’s Critically Acclaimed ‘Coastaline Fire’ LP on Vinyl.

chore-the-coastaline-fire-cover

Canada’s budding Label Obscura has announced that it will release a limited run vinyl reissue of ‘The Coastaline Fire’ LP – the final album by Ontario indie rockers Chore before they disbanded in the early 2000s. All tracks have been remastered for vinyl.
Originally hailing from Dunnville, Ontario, the band found their spiritual home and built up their primary fan base in Hamilton. Chore swelled in the heavier side of Canadian indie rock in the late 90s and early 00s, drawing on the power of Helmet and the intelligence of Fugazi with the majesty of Sunny Day Real Estate to create an eccentric sound of their own.
After releasing two wildly eclectic records with Brian Pettigrew on bass guitar, founding members David Dunham (drums/vox), Chris Bell (guitar/vox), and Mike Bell (guitar/bass) made a drastic step in a new direction by recruiting Mitch Bowden (guitar/vox) for their third and final offering ‘The Coastaline Fire’. Released to critical acclaim in 2002, the release of this album saw the band sharing the stage with such luminaries as The Dismemberment Plan, Shiner, and the Rheostatics while also growing close to such friends as their ‘soon to be successful’ peers as Alexisonfire, Wintersleep and Constantines.
Since that time, all band members have moved on to other music projects. Nowadays, Mike and Chris can be seen and heard in Customaries, Dave drums for Not Of and makes electronic music under the moniker DAVIDS, while Mitch is at the helm of his own project Don Vail.
Label Obscura has exhumed Chore’s swan song to give it new life as a 180 gram double LP with gatefold jacket. Set to drop on November 18, this release will feature updated artwork and liner notes, along with five previously unreleased songs. These include three originals, which were recorded shortly before their dissolution, and two covers (Behind The Wheel by Depeche Mode and Subspace Biographies by Robert Pollard), which were recorded shortly after Mitch joined. This will be on a one-time limited edition pressing of 300 copies…Please enjoy.

The History of Colour TV – Wreck (Cranes Records / Weird Books 2016)

The History of Colour TV set to release ‘Wreck,’ first single from forthcoming third album

Berlin-based trio The History of Colour TV is back with new music, presenting ‘Wreck’, the first single from their forthcoming third album ‘Something Like Eternity’. For this, the band traveled to France in the spring of 2016 to record with Peter Deimel (The Wedding Present, Shellac, The Exat the legendary Black Box Recording Studio. The result represents a departure from their hallmark sound by bringing a raw, minimalist aesthetic to the new release.
Stylistically, ‘Wreck’ is a dynamic and open live recording with minimal overdubs and, in this respect, represents a snapshot of the overall album. With an elongated structure and narrative theme, the song itself blends melodic sensibilities with ragged guitar textures. Building on melancholic arpeggio patterns, ‘Wreck’ unfolds in intensifying sequences, crescendoing in a raging wall-of-sound that engulfs the song in a billowing cloud of guitars.
The History Of Colour TV was founded in Berlin in 2010 by British artist Jaike Stambach, initially conceived as a solo multimedia project involving noisy hypnotic output through audio, video and soundtrack offerings. Over the course of two albums and multiple EPs, released through Bruit Blanc and Saint Marie Records, the band has been unabashedly diverse in their approach, exploring harsh noise, sound collages and reverb-saturated dreampop, to the stripped-down rock of their more recent offerings. They also toured extensively while establishing their notable presence within the Berlin music scene. The current lineup also includes Markus Mocydlarz and Janek Sprachta
While the more organic approach taken for the band’s second widely acclaimed album ‘Shapes Of Spilt Blood Spelt Love’ largely stripped of the electronic attributes of the band’s debut album ‘Emerald Cures Chic Ills’ to present a spacious mix of strategically sparse layers of guitars, minimalist rhythmic patterns and bass-heavy riffs, the forthcoming album ‘Something Like Eternity’ is an album of sparse, immediate performances captured live in studio. The room seemingly reverberates to a wide dynamic range of sonic tapestries ranging from fleeting moments of near-silence to elongated passages of guitar meltdowns, loaded with emotion.
Though enigmatic, ‘Wreck’ recounts the story of a group-friendship tarnished by disaffection and apathy. As a member of this group, the narrator describes feelings of helplessness by the members’ own inability to positively change the situation. A list of surreal descriptions ensues, and the lyrics imply that the friends suffer a serious car crash.  Although their fate remains unclear, the narrator seemingly becomes all-seeing and is left to contemplate the aftermath and randomness of an event that nullified any potential for reconciliation within the group.
‘Wreck’ will be released digitally on November 25. Their album ‘Something Like Eternity’ will be released in early 2017 via French label Cranes Records and the band’s own imprint Weird Books.
