In Her Eye – Change (self released, 1st June 2018)

Only a few years ago nobody would have associated shoegaze to Italy; yet today Italogaze – as it has been dubbed -, starting from an underground word of mouth, has gained a solid international credibility; shoegaze lovers are enthusiastic about bands like Be Forest, Stella Diana, Clustersun, Rev Rev Rev, and happily discover other outfits that animate the scene.

A certain team spirit has been building up too among the bands, many of which are brought together in Mutiny Collective, constantly keeping in touch to exchange ideas and organise events.

Among the most active are Milan-based In Her Eye, whose talent has already been noticed by influential Italian media like Rockit and La Repubblica newspaper.

Their sound is a powerful mixture of 80’s new wave echoes (New Order, The Cure), shoegaze and sonic suggestions (Swervedriver, My Vitriol, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.); all filtered through a genuine rock attitude.

Change is dedicated to movement, to transformation.

In the last few years, original band members (Aldo Bernuzzi, Giuseppe Galotti, Stefano Schiavella) passed through a lot of changings: relationships, new births, life philosophies.

The line-up has changed as well: with Raffaele Bocchetti (former Stella Diana) joining the band, the In Her Eye classic sound recreates and enrichs itself with new hues and shades.

New songs, featuring also backing vocals by Antonia Chiara Ciancaglini (The Mystic Morning), reflect this situation: their signature sound is still there, but they’ve brought it to the next level.

Sometimes it’s psychedelia, sometimes it’s pop. It’s all a game of change.

Change is out on 1st June 2018.

In Her Eye have so far released debut album Anywhere Out Of The World (2011), and Borderline EP (2014).

Since 2015 the band has been involved in a handful of tribute compilations (The Cure, Ride, Wire), while composing the songs for the new album.

Zealot in Wonderland: The Wildhearts: One Love, One Life, One Band by Gary Davidson

Full of laughs, introspection and rock ‘n’ roll antics, Zealot in Wonderland is the story of one man’s unexpected thrust into a powerful obsession with British rock band The Wildhearts. Like every honeymoon period, this one begins with the sun in the sky and the stars to aim for. However, as I get to grips with my own life, relationships, and debilitating depression, what once seemed like a simple journey to my younger self spirals out of control, until my longing for an interview with The Wildhearts’ lead singer, Ginger, causes the honeymoon to turn sour. But through it all, it is ultimately the music which sees me through.

Dirtmusic ‎– Bu Bir Ruya (Glitterbeat 28 January 2018)

There are so many artists and so many releases around us that I am missing lots of them. Luckily enough, I didn’t miss this one…

Dirtmusic is the project that Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts) and Hugo Race (Bad Seeds) founded in 2007.

Their fifth full length album Bu Bir Ruya (“This is a Dream” in Turkish) was recorded in Istanbul and came out in January.

Here they work as a trio with Turkish musician Murat Ertel from the psychedelic Turkish group Baba Zula.

The title of the album describes perfectly the whole thing.

With the opening track, Bi De Sen Soyle, starts a journey into a dreamworld of Eastern psychedelia.

Seven tracks of slow, mesmerizing rhythms, and guiding wispers, ethnic, electronic, and folk merged.

I have a special place in my collection, where I keep some my favorite “different” albums shuch as:
Bill Laswell ‎– Hashisheen : The End Of Law, Hector Zazou ‎– Sahara Blue, Brian Eno – David Byrne ‎– My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, David Sylvian – Gone to Earth, Bob Marley ‎– Dreams Of Freedom (Ambient Translations Of Bob Marley In Dub) and this is where I’ll put Dirtmusic ‎– Bu Bir Ruya.

Thanks guys, you gave us an excellent album.

Dirtmusic are hitting the road in a few weeks.

Rat Scabies – P.H.D. (Prison, Hospital, Debt) Cleopatra Records 18 May 2018

The Damned’s Rat Scabies Teases ‘Chew On You’ from Debut Solo Album P.H.D. (Prison, Hospital, Debt)

Rat Scabies of legendary co-founder of punk rock icons The Damned has announced his forthcoming debut solo album ‘P.H.D. (Prison, Hospital, Debt)’. Ahead of this release, he is previewing the album’s lead track ‘Chew on You’Written by Rat Scabies, who also plays drums, guitar, keyboards and cigar box guitar here, Jesse Budd of Flipron contributes lyrics and vocals, with Nick Oblivion on bass guitar.
“I have written music ever since I threw together ‘Stab Your Back’ and have been recording ideas right up until the very week that PHD was due to be mastered. This is the music I created over a period of years – starting then and ending now,” says Rat Scabies.
The album will be released by Cleopatra Records on CD and digitally, as well as a choice of red or white vinyl. Recorded over several years, this album features 11 original tracks, as well as his version of Louis Prima’s ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’. Rat Scabies self produced and recorded this album at Arch 8 Studios, as well as handling all arrangements.
“Like Charlie Watts said, it’s 5 years work and 25 years hanging around, well during the hanging around periods I always had the itch to learn how music and recording studios worked so I would sit down and plonk on a guitar or a piano until it sounded like music, I carried on with the process over the years and eventually graduated into having my own recording studio and a  bunch of songs which for one reason or another had never seen the light of day,” says Rat Scabies.
“In 2017, Matt Green suggested I release a solo compilation album of previously released material. I didn’t see the point, so I suggested instead that I put together my neglected back catalogue, which was not just about that mad drummer bloke thrashing a kit, but instead showed some of the more musical, humorous and diverse elements that made up my percentage of the Damned.

Rat Scabies (born Christopher Millar in Surrey, England) is a self-described “drummer, grailhunter and cigar box guitar maker”. He was also a founding member of The Damned, one of modern rock’s most influential and important bands. In 1976, Rat teamed up with guitarist Brian James, bassist Ray ‘Captain Sensible’ Burns and vocalist Dave Vanian to form this iconic group. Along with the Sex Pistols and The Clash, they helped to spearhead the punk movement in the UK and are also well known as one of the first gothic rock bands, having a major influence on the goth subculture.

After relentlessly nagging his parents for a drum set, Rat Scabies began playing music at the tender age of eight years old. Once he’d picked up the sticks, he never wanted to do anything else, noting “I would never have been anything but a drummer, no matter what I did”.

After an initial checkered musical education, his first pro gig was in 1975 as a ‘pit player’ at the Thameside Theatre in Grays Essex for the Yorkshire Theatre Company’s production of ‘Puss In Boots’. As unemployment beckoned, he answered a Melody Maker advertisement, reading “Wild Young Drummer Wanted”. He was granted an audition at a sleazy rehearsal room in Paddington, where he met  guitarist Brian James and thus were born punk icons and troublemakers The Damned.
He left the Damned in 1996, but the impression he made on fans was indelible. Although best known for snarling punk anthems like ‘Neat Neat Neat’, ‘New Rose’ and ‘Love Song’, the Damned blossomed into an unpredictable, highly adventurous band in the 1980s, often touching on psychedelia, Motown, goth, and even progressive rock, all the while retaining their aggressive, sometimes sinister edge. Scabies played a crucial role in the group’s evolution, not just as the rhythmic powerhouse, but also as songwriting partner and co-producer on classic albums like ‘Machine Gun Etiquette’, ‘The Black Album’ and‘Strawberries’.
Over the past forty years, Rat has played countless live shows and recorded numerous studio albums. He has collaborated with many top musicians, such as Robert Fripp, Lemmy, Donovan and Neville Staple, as well as Joe Strummer, Jimmy Page, and The Eagles Of Death Metal.

‘P.H.D. (Prison, Hospital, Debt)’ will be available through online stores and streaming platforms as of May 18, but ‘Chew on You’ will be released as a standalone single well prior to that. Listeners can already pre-order the album on vinyl or else on CD via Cleopatra Records or digitally via Bandcamp.

Rat Scabies will be holding two events to mark this album’s release. On Sunday, May 20 in Southsea (Portsmouth), Tales & Tea with Rat Scabies includes a Q&A session and album signing (TeaTray Cafe, Osbourne Road, Southsea – Doors 5pm, Show 5.45pm). On Monday, May 21 in Lewes (East Sussex), Talking & Tales with Rat Scabiesfollows the same format at the Lewes Con Club (139 High Street, BN7 1XS Lewes, East Sussex).

Twilight of the Mortals / Killing Joke Photo Book

Twilight of the Mortals is the new publication from PC-Press. The book is a collection of the incredible work of photographer, confidant, and former post-punk DJ Mont Sherar and the result of his 36-years of love for the band; Killing Joke.

This book documents the period since the original line up of the modern day band after reuniting in 2008 after the untimely death of bassist Paul Raven who had originally replaced Martin Glover (Youth) initially in mid-1982.

This new era until most recent times is presented in a beautifully printed and designed book that comes in both soft and hardback formats, plus a special ltd. edition ‘Analogue’ Deluxe COLLECTORS Vinyl package.

The latter features two 7″ singles on coloured vinyl in a gatefold sleeve designed by none other than legendary, Steven R. Gilmore.

Each member represented by one track each.

These records are classic rarities at pressing, and a collectors dream — limited to 350 copies worldwide.

The book presents 200 plus photos of both the group and it’s individuals, all taken and processed by Sherar from his unique position as a ‘fly on the wall’ photographer with the band over a 7 year period – including the songwriting process of the album, ‘Pylon.’

Printed by Calverts of London on art papers and designed by PC-Press in association with Cactus Design, the book is a riot of colour, energy and intimate images of the band in many different and previously unseen settings.

This one-of-a-kind publication/pressing is for any fan of Killing Joke and its band members as individuals, or avid rare record collector.

Please enjoy with headphones or a decent pair of speakers. 🙂

Here is the new official video that now reflects the updated front and back covers at the summary near the end, posters, Giclee fine-art prints, vinyl 7″ singles, and badges that come with their respective packages.

Note: All 3 versions of the book (Softback First Edition, Hardback Plus First Edition, and Deluxe Collectors Ltd. Edition) come with all 6 badges as reflected in the video.

The Hardback Plus First Edition provides the hardback cover, the badges, plus an additional poster which is the collage of all four band members shown in the top right of the video (A2).

The Deluxe Collectors Ltd. Edition provides all of the above, plus an additional ‘Glicee’ fine art print (A3) that will be randomly selected from a total of several different beautiful images.

This will make each fine art print received per package that much more unique.

Several supporters have participated in helping choose which images these will be – thanks to all for that.

This ‘Giclee’ and its possible variations are reflected in the video via the second print below the poster.

And of course the highlight of it all – the Steven R. Gilmore-designed double 7″ vinyl singles package featuring a contribution from each Jaz, Geordie, Youth, and Big Paul.

You can hear these fantastic tracks by watching the entire full-length version of this video.

Additionally, this version comes encased in a cloth bound box and limited to 350 copies worldwide.

Poptone – Poptone LP (Cleopatra Records 8 June 2018)

Earlier this year, Blackout Radio Show had an exclusive interview (that you can listen HERE) with author and Bauhaus co-founder Kevin Haskins regarding his book about Bauhaus.

He also revealed that Poptone soon will put out an album….

Poptone announces teased first offering from debut album, announces West Coast tour
Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets teams with Diva Dompé as Poptone

Bauhaus, Tones On Tail and Love and Rockets – all critically acclaimed bands. Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins were founding members of all three. Now joined by Kevin’s daughter Diva Dompé on bass, they have formed a new band called POPTONE.
The three-piece have announced the impending release of the debut ‘Poptone’ album via Cleopatra Records. This double LP consists of 13 songs from their set, originally recorded for a recent Part Time Punks session on KXLU. The band will also soon be touring the West Coast Tour in May.
Poptone was propelled to life by an epiphany that woke Daniel Ash up in February 2017. In the early hours, loudly jolted awake by Motorhead’s ‘Ace of Spades’, Ash had a light bulb moment…”I need to play live again”.

Borrowing their name from 1979 seminal P.I.L track, Poptone is bringing back to life the ground-breaking music of Bauhaus, Love and Rockets and the otherworldly Tones On Tail, playing a diverse repertoire of their own highly original and hugely influential music.

Their set leans heavily on Tones On Tail, the songs of which have not been performed live for over 30 years! With Diva Dompé faithfully recreating original bassist Glenn Campling’s incredible bass lines, Poptone has essentially resurrected the Tones’ archives. Having played only 27 live dates during their existence, this band remains somewhat of an enigma. Poptone also performs a sprinkling of solo Daniel Ash, a healthy dose of classic Love and Rockets, and a dash of Bauhaus with live sets also featuring the odd inspirational cover to stir things up.

“It’s been a real treat to revisit the unique and eclectic Tones catalog,” says Kevin Haskins. “I feel that there are many people who didn’t get a chance to see us back in the day and so I am excited for them to hear these weird and wonderful songs played live again. With the addition of Bauhaus and Love And Rockets material, it’s a veritable feast for the ears!”
Poptone have been delivering a blistering live show across America over the past year. This will continue in 2018 with eight dates in May already confirmed. With the band rehearsing previously numbers they’ve not yet played live, 2018 looks to be another great year with an eye to writing new material further down the road. The May tour sees the band come to California’s Solana Beach, Pomona, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Santa Cruz, followed by Seattle, Portland and Vancouver.
Poptone are fulfilling a lifelong dream for much of their audience, most of whom would not have seen Tones On Tail play live during their brief existence. Of course, Bauhaus was resurrected in 1998 (after a 15-year absence) and again during 2005-06 and, save for occasional appearances in 2007 & 2008, Love and Rockets bowed out in 1999. For all three groups, but especially with respect to Tones on Tail, this is your chance to seize the day – Go!
The new ‘Poptone’ record will be available digitally, on CD in a mini jacket, and on white vinyl in a striking 2 LP set and can already be pre-ordered with advance copies of the LP available exclusively at Poptone live shows.

Rodney Cromwell – Rodney’s English Disco (Happy Robots Records 25 May 2018)

Rodney Cromwell to release ‘Rodney’s English Disco’ EP, reveals ‘Comrades’ video

British indietronica synthpop artist Rodney Cromwell has announced his forthcoming new ‘Rodney’s English Disco’ EP, his first collection of all new material in three years. Previewed by the song ‘Comrades’, which also features a 12″ extended dance mix by electronica act Vieon, the new EP will be available on 7″ vinyl, CD and digitally via London-based Happy Robots Records.

Where the debut album ‘Age of Anxiety’ by Rodney Cromwell (real name Adam Cresswell) drew on personal demons, on this new EP, social and political tribulations in the UK inspired these wry songs of woe. ‘Comrades’ is a robotic turbocharged rebel song for the twitter generation. ‘Barbed Wire’ is a song from across the barricades of the supermarket checkout. ‘Technocrats’ is a song for our illusory robot masters. ‘Dreamland’ is a breakup song for someone who just wants to go back to bed and pretend none of this ever happened. Sonically, this music sits between Kraftwerk, Pye Corner Audio and the Best of Divine.

Rodney Cromwell’s evocative synthpop looks to the proto-electronica of the 70’s and 80’s to construct a twisted soundtrack for the post-truth world. The instrumentation of the new EP has been kept intentionally minimal with its drum sounds taken entirely from a vintage Boss DR-55 drum machine and with a self-imposed limit on the amount of hissy analogue gear used in its making. Melody and dark humour combine with simple motorik rhythms, soaring bass lines and the bleeps of retro synths, all within a lo-fi pop aesthetic.

Cromwell’s sound has been compared to the analogue electronica of Kraftwerk, Section 25 and the ‘retro futurists’ of Ghostbox Records. His miserablism and dark humour has been compared to that of The Cure and John Grant.

Rodney Cromwell’s debut album and subsequent EPs found crossover appeal, gaining Cromwell coverage from the likes of NME, Electronic Sound Mag, Huffington Post and Steve Lamacq and Gideon Coe on BBC 6 Music and on Spain’s national RNE3. At the end of 2015, Rodney Cromwell featured in 25 ‘Best of’ lists and was named ‘Most Promising New Act’ by The Electricity Club. ‘Barry Was an Arms Dealer’ featured in the 2015 Official Festive 50

The video for ‘Comrades’ was produced by Dariy Karyakin, who has produced for David Lynch pet fave Nocturne Blue, has been praised by 6-time Emmy Winner Dutch Rall, and has earned various awards and honours. The sleeve artwork is by Latvian photographer Jelena Osmolovska, whose distinctive gritty post-Soviet fantasy aesthetic compliments the sound of this record.

Along with four original tracks by Rodney Cromwell, the EP features remixes by Rémi Parson, Vieon, Pattern Language and the debut release by Alice Hubble (Arthur & Martha, Mass Datura).

‘Rodney’s English Disco’ EP will be released on May 25 and available on red 7” vinyl, CD and digitally. Distributed by Cargo, this album is already available for pre-order via the Happy Robots Records store or Bandcamp. Catch Rodney Cromwell on tour in May.
