Ummagma – Compass (Leonard Skully Records 26 July 2019)

Ummagma presents dreamy ‘High Day’ indiepop taster ahead of ‘Compass’ album release

Indie pop electronic rock duo Ummagma has announced their new album ‘Compass’, to be released on July 26 via Manchester-based label Leonard Skully Records. Their third long-play, this is the duo’s first album in seven years and also the first time the band is releasing a record on vinyl. Ahead of this album, they present the ‘High Day’ single, a song about reflection on how short life really is and the need for reconcilation before it’s too late.

Formed in Moscow in 2003, McLarnon hails from the Yukon Territory in northern Canada while Kretov is originally from western Ukraine. Now based in Ontario, the couple completed this album over five years and multiple moves, ultimately hauling their studio with them across the Atlantic and setting up all over again. With such transience in the real world, how could their sonic world reflect anything other than the same fluidity and movement?

“High Day was inspired by a stupid argument we had as a couple. I don’t even recall what it was about, but it was frivolous and I conscientiously chose to stay mad at Alex for a few days, carrying around this negativity with me. As we sat in separate towns, it dawned on me that it could be that way – we could be separated permanently – if we don’t just learn to let go of what is not important. I wrote this song and sang it to him. We got past our pride really soon and moved on. Music can be such a healing force,” says Shauna McLarnon.

This single follows Caravan, which was released with b-side ‘Ty i Ya’, with Alexander Kretov performing in his native Ukrainian language. This is the band’s first single released in a language other than English, stepping beyond the confines of past songwriting limits.

Comprised of 12 tracks with a bonus track (‘Bouquet’) offered for the digital version, ‘Compass’ is beguiling in its post-genre nature. It is an album of grace and change, of familiarity and exploration, of emotion and euphoria, of sky-scraping cinematic highs and intimate and intriguing lows. This is the sound of a band allowing themselves to jump creative divides, to kick down musical barriers, and rip up the rule book or perhaps just ignore the fact that there ever was one in the first place.

This forward thinking collection of songs is not bound to fad nor fashion, time or place. Every shimmering dreamscape found here is balanced with more robust and driven grooves, sometimes even within the same song. ‘Otherwise’ projects a drifting, woozy platform through which they thread reggae infusions and delicate distant Spanish guitars into something sultry and solid yet ethereal and chameleon-like. ‘Galicticon’ hints at Vangelis-inspired soundtracks, ‘LCD’ is a strident rock urge, warped and woven with strange musical motifs and gorgeous glitches, and ‘Bouquet’ is an otherworldly slice of balladry.

This record follows on the trail of their ‘LCD’ EP with Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and Dean Garcia (Curve), and ‘Winter Tale’ EP with 4AD dreampop pioneer A.R.Kane. Both of these were released in 2017.

They say you can tell a lot about someone by the company that they keep, and the same holds true for a band. Ummagma’s collaborations speak volumes. Apart from these three dreampop-shoegaze icons, they’ve worked with Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark’s Malcolm Holmes, Swervedriver’s Graham Bonnar, and nudisco kingpin Alexander Robotnick.

Ummagma’s music has always presented an exhilarating positive vision, showcasing their ability to wander diverse musical pathways. Representing Ukraine among 23 countries, they won the Alternative Eurovision on Amazing Radio in 2013, and have been featured in a full-page spread in Rolling Stone Russia. In 2015, their collaborative ‘New Born’ album with Sounds of Sputnik also received a Jagermeister indie award, Russia’s most esteemed music award.

As of July 26, the ‘Compass’ album’ will be available via iTunesAmazon and Spotify and can also be obtained directly via Bandcamp. It is also being released via Leonard Skully Records on black vinyl and CD with artwork by Alexander Kretov.

Throwing Muses Boston, San Diego and Pasadena shows announced 23 August 2019

Throwing Muses Announce Boston, San Diego and Pasadena Shows: first performances since 2014 tour

Celebrated art-punk trailblazers Throwing Muses have announced three new shows, their first live dates since their 2014 American tour. August brings performances in Boston, San Diego and Pasadena, California. The first is August 23 at Boston’s City Winery, followed by August 20 at San Diego’s Soda Bar and August 31 at the Pasadena Daydream Festival.

Fred Abong, formerly also of Throwing Muses during the ‘Real Ramona’ period will open the Boston and San Diego shows in support of his new ‘Pulsing’ EP. His music is alternately described as “ragged Replacements” and “Elliott Smith with balls”.

These Throwing Muses dates follow Kristin Hersh’s current tour as an electric trio, together with Fred Abong and Rob Ahlers, drummer in Hersh’s other band 50FOOTWAVE. For the remainder of June, Hersh is touring the U.S. East Coast in support of her album ‘Possible Dust Clouds’, with Fred Abong also playing an opening solo set.

Comprised of Kristin Hersh, David Narcizo and Bernard George, Throwing Muses is a groundbreaking band who tossed out every rule in the book and effortlessly changed the face of alternative music. The Muses first gained traction in the early ‘80s, playing with similar artists, such as The Pixies and Dinosaur Jr.

Throwing Muses’ most recent release is 2013’s double CD masterpiece ‘Purgatory/Paradise’

, an epic 32-song CD / book combination with photographs and essays by Kristin—also an acclaimed author—and artwork by David Narcizo. Played as a series of movements dovetailing into a powerful statement, this artful piece outdoes everything in this band’s long, illustrious career, proving that the Muses has only peaks, no valleys, unbelievably continuing to outdo themselves with every record.

Signed to 4AD and Sire/Warner Brothers as teenagers, Hersh quickly realized she was not interested in playing the corporate industry game and traded her first solo record (the highly acclaimed ‘Hips and Makers’, featuring ‘Your Ghost’) for her band’s freedom. Released from contractual obligations, Hersh and her bands—including 50FOOTWAVE, who pioneered the ‘pay what you want’ model—are now entirely listener-supported.

Hersh describes her band as “Three shy friends from a little island, freaking the f*** out. We play because we’re addicted to the noise and because we love each other. We’ve never stopped playing. Thirty years on a bus together only encouraged us to play more and no one has told us to shut up yet.” The Boston show is an all-ages event. Tickets go on sale to the public as of June 24 at 3pm EST and are now available to City Winery members and Strange Angels. A Meet & Greet Soundcheck Party with the band , limited to 40 persons, starts at 5pm.

On August 30, the San Diego show at Soda Bar starts at 9:30, doors open at 8:30 pm. The next day, Throwing Muses appear at the Pasadena Daydream Festival, curated by The Cure’s Robert Smith. Of nine handpicked groups slated to perform, Kristin Hersh is among just four artists from last year’s Smith-curated Meltdown Festival invited back to perform at this year’s event (the others being Mogwai, The Joy Formidable and The Twilight Sad).

RISE – Dark Cloud (June 28th 2019)

R I S E (aka Jo Beth Young) is an English songwriter whose relentlessly authentic songs and mesmeric voice cut deep into the fabric of human frailty with a visionary sound swaying hypnotically between dream folk and progressive grit; at times dark but always beautiful.

With beautifully crafted songs, enrapturing emotional performances and cinematic sounds, R I S E has reaped incredible support from acclaimed artists including Juldeh Camara (Robert Plant), Henry Thomas (George Michael, Van Morrison), Peter Yates (Fields of the Nephillim), Mike Rowe (Sheryl Crow, Noel Gallagher), Arnulf Linder (K.T Tunstall).

Since the release of her debut album ‘An Abandoned Orchid House’ in 2018 (under the longer moniker of Talitha Rise) she has been gathering international acclaim and support from BBC 6, BBC Introducing Devon, and the legendary ECHOES Radio in the USA who made her the number 1 album of the year.

Establishing her unique sound early on in Ireland cutting her teeth on the folk circuit, she returned to the UK and met her long-term collaborator Martyn Barker (Shriekback, Goldfrapp, Robert Plant) and caught the attention of Chris Difford (Squeeze) who sang on her debut EP Blue.

As a live artist R I S E, has started to reach new heights. Opening for acts such as Renaissance, Boo Hewardine, Julia Biel, Antonio Forcione and Shriekback, and she has held the spellbound attention of audiences at The Maltings, St. Pancras London, and sold out her 2017 and 2018 headline shows in Sussex and Devon.

With comparisons to Kate Bush, Stevie Nicks, Mazzy Star, Tori Amos threading through Pink Floyd-esque sounds, it is still hard to pin down Rise’s sounds and influences. There are hints of her classical singing beginnings, her Celtic studies and love of early prog, Tim Buckley and Nick Drake, but ultimately, a rarity in these times, she sounds distinctively like herself.

Jo-Beth decided on the change of name to RISE from Talitha Rise to mark the next phase of her career as a solo artist and is currently in production of her second album ‘Strangers’ due for release in October 2019 on the Thoroughbred Music label with upcoming tour dates in the UK and Ireland.

Pre-album tour warm up gigs (showcasing Strangers LIVE)

July 11th – B Bar Plymouth

July 12th – The Angel Gallery – Totnes

July 13th – Feather’s Hotel, Ledbury Fringe Festival

July 27th Lepallooza, Bude Cornwall

Beauty in Chaos – Beauty Re-Envisioned (33.33 Music Collective 21 June 2019)

Beauty in Chaos presents ‘Beauty Re-Envisioned’ LP and new video for ‘Storm ft. Ashton Nyte (Acoustic Version)’

LA-based alt-rock group Beauty in Chaos present the new album ‘Beauty Re-Envisioned’ at the same time as unveiling the new video for ‘Storm ft. Ashton Nyte (Acoustic Version)’. Their second long-play includes a wide array of remixes and alternate versions of tracks from their acclaimed debut album ‘Finding Beauty in Chaos’.

Released via LA-based label 33.3 Music Collective, both albums were recorded at Ciravolo’s own SAINTinLA Studio and produced by Grammy-nominated producer Michael Rozon, best known for his work with Ministry.

Beauty in Chaos is the brainchild of guitarist Michael Ciravolo. Originally from New Orleans and now based in Los Angeles, he is perhaps best known as President of Schecter Guitar Research. Ciravolo has played guitar in Human Drama for the past 30 years, as well as playing live and recording with Michael Aston’s Gene Loves Jezebel since 1998.

“On ‘Beauty Re-Envisioned’, I basically handed the keys to the car over to an amazingly talented cast of producers, engineers, re-mixers, DJs and artists, including Tim Palmer, Kevin Haskins, John Fryer, Statik, Ummagma and Marilyn Manson’s Paul Wiley…  giving them near total autonomy to throw the puzzle of ‘Finding Beauty in Chaos’ on the floor and reassemble it as they hear it. Here we have some extremely diverse re-envisions that run the gamut sonically and stylistically, with a few surprises thrown in,” says Michael Ciravolo.

About the new acoustic version of ‘Storm’, he adds, “This version and the accompanying video are the perfect foil to the bombastic ‘Un-Natural Disaster’, the debut single off this album. It was important to me that not all of the re-mixes and alt-versions on this record where 4-on-the-floor aimed at dance clubs, which some remix records seem to target.”

Mixed and produced by Ashton Nyte (The Awakening), the video for ‘Storm (Acoustic Version)’ was filmed and directed by Vicente Corderoand produced by Industrialism Films.

“When Michael suggested I have a go at re-imagining something for the ‘Beauty Re-envisioned’ album, I knew it had to be ‘Storm’. As the first song we had written together for the first album, it seemed only fitting that it get a loving remake for the new release.  As a big fan of acoustic music, I wanted to try a stripped down, more intimate approach to this version. This meant re-recording it from scratch, as I wanted to re-sing the vocals in a more introspective way, to match the arrangement I had in my head,” says Ashton Nyte.

The debut album ‘Finding Beauty in Chaos’ features numerous music luminaries, including Wayne Hussey (The Mission), Simon Gallup (The Cure), Robin Zander (Cheap Trick), Pete Parada (The Offspring), dUg Pinnick (Kings X), ICE-T (Body Count), Michael Aston (Gene Loves Jezebel), Michael Anthony (Van Halen), Dirk Doucette (Gene Loves Jezebel), Ashton Nyte (The Awakening), Pando (A Flock of Seagulls), Evi VineBetsy Martin  (Caterwaul/Purr Machine), Marc Danzeisen (The Riverdogs), Kevin Kipnis (Purr Machine/ Kommunity FK), Rudy Matchinga (Red Scare), Johnny Indovina (Human Drama), and Tish Ciravolo (StunGun/ Daisy Rock Guitars).

The new album involves many of these same players, with the addition of acclaimed producer Tim Palmer, guitar icon Zakk Wylde, Kevin Haskins (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets), Paul Wiley (Marilyn Manson), Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson), and Rolan Bolan, who joins Wayne Hussey for a rendition of T-Rex’s ’20th Century Boy’.

Earlier, Beauty in Chaos presented the first single ‘Un-Natural Disaster’ ft. dUg Pinnick, Zakk Wylde and Ice-T (Collide Mix), which premiered in Rolling Stone. The second single ‘Drifting Away’ ft. Robin Zander (Synthetic Capricorn Mix) also has Michael Anthony (Van Halen) on back vocals and was remixed by Paul Wiley (Marilyn Manson) and Steven Alexander Ryan (The Black Queen).

As of June 21, ‘Beauty Re-Envisioned’ is available on deluxe CD and limited-edition heavy-weight colored vinyl. It is also being released digitally, with a Spotify version to appear later. CDs and vinyl can be ordered directly from Beauty in Chaos at www.beautyinchaosmusic.com/music-store. Apart from the 14 core tracks, album orders placed via the website also come with 11 bonus remixes.

Eternal Life Eternal Youth is the debut album featuring 5 brand new tracks along with 5 of the released singles and album art created by Jussi Gamache of Freezepop.

A guide to the songs and the artists of The Unquiet Grave 2019 compilation

The Unquiet Grave 2019 is the newest Cleopatra Records compilation.

As the label states: “In honor of the 20th Anniversary of the first volume of The Unquiet Grave, Cleopatra Records presents The Unquiet Grave 2019 featuring 25 international Post-Punk, Goth, Industrial, Synthwave and Experimental artists from across the dark music spectrum. The original concept behind The Unquiet Grave varied from Cleopatra’s other highly successful boxed set compilations during that time, such as The Goth Box as well as The Black Bible, that featured bands such as Bauhaus, Virgin Prunes and Legendary Pink Dots along with various up-and-coming bands. Meanwhile, The Unquiet Grave exclusively featured newer and obscure artists, showcasing these unheralded hardworking bands that earned the opportunity for exposure to a larger audience. That said, the original 1999 release included such fledgling bands as Bella Morte, Diary of Dreams, Android Lust and Rhea’s Obsession, to name a few. The Unquiet Grave 2019 applies the same formula as that original volume featuring 25 deserving bands from all over the global dark music underground.”

Released June 14, 2019, the album opens with The Ink Bats and their track “No Other”.

  1. The Ink Bats are part of the exploding Post-Punk scene in Oakland, CA, and “No Other” the opener of this compilation, opens their self-released debut album “Loss” also, that came out in 2017 on CD as well as LP. It’s hard to put your finger on their sound, but their impeccable quality and dark energy has cultivated quite a fast-growing fan base.
  2. Social Station is a post-punk/dark wave artist based in Washington DC that participates with the track “Try (Cross My Heart)“. With influences ranging from new wave and post-punk to jangle and dream pop, they forge an original haunting but accessible sound.
  3. Inspired by the gritty extremes of her new digs in New York, German-American performance artist Kai Irina Hahn founded her EBM band The Sedona Effect in 2013 in Brooklyn, NY as a solo project that involved a number of very talented musical collaborators in the US and Europe. The Sedona Effect song is titled “I Burn”. A sexy voice and hard beats blend into distorted melodies that long for a harmony that the estranged self will never reach.
  4. Only You” is the title of the Future Pop tune by Antidote For Annie. PaTrick and Tracey, hail from Boston MA, begun in the late 90’s. The project has constantly been growing and transforming, covering a range of styles and sounds. The more things have evolved and matured, the more the soul of the project became clear. An intersection of beauty and melancholia, in turns dark and angry or calm and reflective. Antidote For Annie is about finding your own way through, even if the path keeps changing.
  5. Tidal (Panic Lift Mix)” is one more tune made to get you on the dancefloor. Silver Walks happened almost by accident. Born out of Pennsylvania’s seminal Shadowland Lancaster parties, ringleader and primary songwriter Daniel McCullough’s project has blended emotional songwriting with experimentalism and electronics for the last three years. What we have here is a remix of the debut single “Tidal” taken from the EP “Songs of Love and Hate” that came out in May 2019.
  6. New Zero God appear on this compilation with “Broken Halo”. An unreleased track from the sessions of their fourth album “Circus of Tortured Melodies” that came out on March 15. New Zero God is a five piece post-punk band from Athens, Greece and their history is connected with names such as The Mission, Sisters of Mercy, Sex Gang Children (Andi Sex Gang makes a guest appearance on their latest album) Christian Death, New Model Army and Legendary Pink Dots.
  7. The Long Losts are a dark rock duo from NY made up of vocalist Anka and her husband Patrick on guitar that began in 2012. Their music combines goth and punk rock with lyrics inspired by their love for each other and the things that they love; Autumn, Halloween, nature, romance, ghosts and their memories all wrapped in a dark Victorian aesthetic. Their song is “Skeleton Thief”…
  8. Schedule IV is a quintet coming from each of the four corners of Metro Detroit. Featuring Steph Strange (formerly of Strangeling and Venereal Injection), Mike Phipps (Pulse State, ex-D:Konstruct), Don Gransden (formerly of DeLIEN and Siegemachine), Joshua McAllister (formerly of function13 and DeLIEN), and Jervon Molloy (function13), Schedule IV participate with their post-punk composition “Stray”.
  9. Influenced by artists such as KMFDM, Ministry, Razed in Black and others, New Yorkers, Carlos Marzano and Cliff Cage bring the HypoFixx project to the compilation with the industrial tune “Electrified (Cliff Cage’s Minimal Destruction Mix)”. The original version of this track can be found on their “Symbiosis” album that was released in 2018…
  10. Lorelei Dreaming is the brain child of Lorelei from Chicago, to bring theatrical electronic music to the stage and digital world. After touring in 2015 and 2016 with Angelspit, doing live guest vocals with Velvet Acid Christ, and debuting live 2016 performances for St. Griselda, Lorelei is teaming up with the incomparable Zoog Von Rock to release this new self-titled project. They offer to the compilation the Digital Gnosis Remix of their “Edge Of The World”. The original version is available on their 2017 “Banshee” album.
  11. UK’s Fear Incorporated appear here with their “Ouija Board Apparitions”. Fear Incorporated formed in 2008 as a theatre macabre avant garde band. Since then 6 albums two singles, two EPs and a compilation album have been released through various European record labels. Their present line-up consists by William Westwater and Berwyn Waddon.
  12. Metamorph is a pulse driven entry into other dimensions. A global alchemy of music crossing boundaries with enticing blends of electronics and acoustics, and capable of awakening human potential. Margot Day‘s multi-range vocals and mastery of the flute entwine and merge with producer and multi-instrumentalist Kurtis Knight’s guitar, keyboards, synthesizer and beats. Their song is titled “Winds of Durga”.
  13. Angel Metro follows with her “Stranger Times”. Angel Metro hails from Charlottesville, Virginia and she created this project to gate her Music, DJ’ing, Acting and Modeling projects. Focused on Gothic, Pin-up, Horror, SciFi, and Post-Apocalyptic stylings.
  14. Abbey Death is the name of which Abbey Nex and Valerie Abbey (Gentile), from Brooklyn NY, appear on the compilation, offering their track “Trance”. Valerie & Abbey are known for their energetic performances in Combichrist, The Crushadows, Psyclon Nine, Angelspit, Genitorturers & Black Tape for a Blue Girl.
  15. Formed in early 2000, The Drowning Season is a guitar oriented gothic rock band consisting of Matt Slowikowski (vocals, programming), Jason Lee (guitars, programming), and multi-instrumentalist Sideshow (taking on drum and synth duties) that participate on “The Unquiet Grave 2019” with the track “Brighter Than A Thousand Suns”. They view The Sisters of Mercy, The Mission (UK) and Fields of the Nephilim as their major influences.
  16. Mermaids” is the title of the next tune, taken from the album “Monsters” that May May Graves put out last year. The album was produced by Angelspit’s Zoog Von Rock. Billed as the “genderfuck of your nightmares”, May May quit her job as a Church of Christ preacher in 2011 to be in a punk band. It all goes downhill from there. Today, May May Graves has solidified her place in the dfw burlesque and drag scene and has toured stages across America, disappointing billions and captivating few with her dark, witty, and macabre stage presence. In doing that, she was the First Drag Queen to be crowned EVIL QUEEN OF BURLESQUE in 2015 and was even the First Drag Queen featured at the Dallas Burlesque Festival 2014. Her dark, macabre, and campy fetish themed performances have captivated and terrorized audiences across the country. May May can also be seen working as “head queen” at the Dallas School of Burlesque, where she is currently teaching classes in drag, lap dance, and seduction.
  17. Red Lokust were found in 2015 when Lee Lauer of Aslan Faction approached Jim Semonik of Rein[Forced]– at a KMFDM show. They appear on this compilation with their track “Speechless V2.0” taken from their album “The Repercussions Of Shedding Your Skin” released in 2016.
  18. Not As Brightly Lit” is the title of this one by Acclimate. Τhis experimental/ambient project from New Zealand, is the brain child of Artemis Kowalski and Martin Bowes of ATTRITION, appears as a special guest.
  19. Traumabond from Chicago, Illinois is the industrial project of Jennifer Jilbert and Nicola Palazzo. Their offering is titled “The Collective You”.
  20. ENGRAM are Martin Bowes and John Costello from the UK. The two of them have created and performed electronic experiments in sound for 30 years apiece. Martin with ATTRITION. John mostly under his own name. Here they participate with their “Hi Teikei No” from their album “Das Kapital” that came out last year.
  21. The brainchild of EBM/Industrial solo artist Paul M. Graham, Tragic Impulse from Pittsburgh, PA, was born from the ashes of the project Eisengeist. “Space Force” that appears on the compilation, is the first single off of Tragic Impulse’s upcoming album “Echoes of the Unseen” on Distortion Productions.
  22. Spider Lillies is a four piece from Washington, DC. This is an electro-goth-rock band led by Stacey Campbell, a former guitarist/backup vocalist of the Cruxshadows. The band’s debut album “In the Light” was released in 2006. A second full-length album, “Cyclogenesis,” released in 2009, followed by a remix disc, “Eyes of the Storm,” in 2010, and the “Error EP” in the fall of 2014, featuring new original songs as well as remixes from Aesthetic Perfection, Ego Likeness, Assemblage 23, Sebastian Komor, etc. They have performed with bands such as Ego Likeness, Bella Morte, Voltaire, Adoration Destroyed, Null Device, Project Pitchfork, Ayria, etc. “The Unquiet Grave 2019” compilation features their song “The Error is You”.
  23. RCH IV aka Richey Rose is a NYC-based musician and songwriter. Originally from Kentucky, Richey began writing songs and playing in local punk bands at age 13. Self-described as ‘dreamy slacker pop with plenty of riffs’, Rose’s songwriting combines his love of Left Coast punk and British new wave with his American South upbringing. His song is “Blodigel”.
  24. Dreamchild from Boston, Massachusetts, brings to the compilation the song “Alone”. Frank Gerace & Cheryl Wanner (Dreamchild) are well-known composers & musicians, who have provided music for several theatrical productions in Boston. They’re also known for the intensity of their own live performances, and use loops/samples, vocal techniques (ethnic ululation, flamenco flourish & operatic power) and unusual instrumentation to create music of ethereal nightmares and fever dreams.
  25. The album closes with the track “Wire” by Moss Garten…

The album is produced and compiled by Athan Maroulis

Sendelica are well-known to all followers of FdM, of course, but Secret Knowledge are unexepected visitors – legendary writer Kris Needs and singer Wonder Schneider recorded some classic House/Techno tracks for the likes of Andrew Weatherall’s Sabres of Paradise label in the 90s…as for The Orb, well Dr Alex Paterson and co pretty much invented ambient house at the end of the 80s and have been breaking through musical boundaries for the last 30 years.
‘Windmill’ marks a rare organic collision between three disparate outfits who turned unimaginable tragedy into a beautiful eulogy after an astonishing musical journey.

On the night of Sunday June 3, 2018, Kris Needs lost his soul mate Helen Donlon after an illness she preferred not to know about. A respected literary agent and author, Helen and had got together with Kris in 2013 and they lived happily in a medieval cottage in Thaxted until events took their terrible turn. Kris was already on a mission to bring Sendelica into the mainstream music press and struck up a friendship with Pete Bingham that was already pointing to a cover version of Tim Buckley’s ‘Driftin’.
On hearing the awful news about Helen, Pete quietly transformed the music into a poignant eulogy with this tragic new dimension to deal with, bringing in Sendelica bassist Glenda Pescado, sax god Lee Relfe and production maestro Colin Consterdine to enhance its gorgeous swirl.
When Wonder, who had sung with Kris in Secret Knowledge 25 years earlier, heard the piece she called it ‘Windmill’, after the beautiful place where Helen had been laid to rest. “The windmill looks so big and strong and beautiful,” she explains, “in a silent way it watches over her, like you did. And it never stops, always protecting“. Wonder flew to the UK from her home in Cleveland, Ohio to sing the song at the magical Mwnci Studios, near Cardigan, giving a heart-wrenching performance while facing Helen’s photo (wearing her favourite purple velvet scarf) that reduced the room to tears. Helen’s beloved dog Jack, now her earthly representative, was also there to make the picture complete.
It didn’t stop there either. Kris’s old friend Alex Paterson had already said he wanted to do a remix. Working with Paul Conboy, his co-pilot in Orb spin-off Chocolate Hills, Alex produced two time-stopping remixes, using a recording of Helen’s speech on her beloved Ibiza at the 2017 Breaking Convention conference; her last major appearance in public entrancing the crowd at the world’s foremost psychedelic drugs conference.
With Kris’s photo of the Thaxted windmill on the cover, a rare heavenly synchronicity seemed to have been at work to produce this record. It’s an unimaginably beautiful tribute to a very beautiful person, lost too soon but alive forever in the music. She would have loved it.

’CROMLECH CHRONICLES IV’ by Sendelica – The Door Into Summer – three-sided colour vinyl double LP (4th side – UV colour printed) winkle 37
on sale late July

Sendelica’s latest annual Pilgrimage to Mwnci Studio in has resulted in a full-on musical head collision of West Wales with the West coast of USA.

Not so much down the rabbit hole but more of a trip through the door into the summer of West Coast USA circa 66-70 – a door of perception opening into the jamming delights of Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly and The Byrds at the heights of their improvisational prowess.

Although these bands were quite adept at writing ‘hit songs’, it is their live alchemy that has been drawn into the ever-evolving brewing pot of Sendelica…disjunctive song structures, key and time changes, modal melodies and drones that entwine and evolve into a magical musical journey.

Tune In, Turn on, Turn down the lights, indulge in whatever tickles your fancy and let the Odyssey of Cromlech IV engulf your senses!

Cromlech IV is the final part of the Sendelica series and they’re signing off with something a bit special – a double LP, but with three long (23 min+) sides of music and the fourth blank side overprinted in UV full-colour, a new technique offed by the Record Industry pressing plant (not so much a picture disc, more a disc with a picture on it…)

‘WHEN AN OLD CRICKETER LEAVES THE CREASE’ / ‘SUPERNAUT’ by Jack Ellister vinyl 45rpm – crustacean 90, on sale late-July

Jack Ellister was recently voted FdM’s favourite solo artist, so it’s great to have him back on Fruits de Mer with a newly-recorded single – even more so when you hear that he’s chosen to reinterpret two songs that are about as far apart in their style and origins as anything that’s appeared on the label in over 10 years.

‘Supernaut’ first appeared on the album, ‘Black Sabbath IV‘ and is based on one of the all-time great heavy rock riffs.

‘When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease’ is from Roy Harper‘s album, ‘HQ‘ and is probably Roy’s best-loved song.

According to FdM’s Keith: Jack had been working on ‘Supernaut’ for a while when we met in a pub near Spitalfields record fair, along with Heyday’s Nick Leese and mate Craig Palmer. For some reason, talk moved onto Roy’s classic track – I think because we felt Jack’s voice was really suited to it; coming from Poland, by way of Germany and the Netherlands, Jack didn’t know the song, let along why the hell cricket means so much to middle/old-aged English blokes, but he vowed to investigate further – and he didn’t disappoint.

When it comes to two sides of a single, the phrase ‘poles apart’ never seemed more apt.

Jack explains the background behind the recordings….
“the grand piano used on ‘Cricketer’ belonged to my grand father in Torun, Poland.
In 1990/1991 my father took me and Tomasz to Poland to get it over to Germany. We had to smuggle it out because it was forbidden to transport instruments across the border, as they might be valuable collectible items or state property. We did it in two turns using an old Mercedes 9-seater. On the first trip we took the inner metal works and mechanics out and hid them under lots of other stuff. On the second journey a month later we got the wooden frame, which appeared like a sort of cheap big wardrobe when not inspected properly. Luckily the wooden outer parts fit into the lift in Stuttgart and didn’t need to be carried up the stairs to our flat on the 6th floor where we lived in at that time. It was great to have it around and we used it a lot on early recordings.
My brother Tomasz was then made to play classical music on that thing for about seven years, and he recorded me playing ‘Cricketer’ in the living room in Stuttgart (not the same flat) just before it went back to Poland for good, together with my parents.

‘Supernaut’ is one of those Sabbath tracks that doesn’t seem to belong to their obvious classics, but for me it somehow earned itself a special place in their canon. Tomasz sent me the drums recorded in his cellar studio/rehearsal space and I added all the rest at home.”

PLEASE READ ME’ / ‘MOTHS MISTOOK US FOR THE MOON’ by Soft Hearted Scientists vinyl 45rpm – winkle 38, on sale late-July

The Welsh cardiologically-inclined alchemists returned to the studio earlier this year after a lengthy break to record a cover for a year-end Fruits de Mer retrospective that we’re still working on – but the result was so strong I felt it deserved a single release in its own right and the band had such a good time they decided to work on a new song to go with it.

So here we have The Bee Gees‘ ‘Please Read Me’, a 60s pop-psych gem from the brothers Gibb with not the faintest whiff of cheese to it is given a magical makeover, paired with an all-new SHS song, ‘Moths Mistook Us For The Moon’, that’s just lovely and has that classic Soft Hearted Scientists sound.

SPACE EDITION’ by London Underground colour vinyl double LP, crustacean 89, on sale late July

With a history that traces back to the classic Italian band, Standarte, London Underground formed in December 1998 in Florence; they began by recreating the UK keyboard sounds of the likes of Brian Auger and George Fame, moving onto a more progressive rock feel by the time they released their second album.

After a period of inactivity, in 2008 Gianluca Gerlini reformed the band and recorded their third album ‘Honey Drops‘; The London Underground today have a sound that is still inspired by the Hammond – now purely instrumental, they also draw influences from soundtracks of films from the 60s and 70s.

The website Progressive Rock Fanatics summed things up rather neatly…’If you like keyboards and more keyboards layered over keyboards, with an astonishingly tight rhythm section laying down tight grooves- you’ll love LONDON UNDERGROUND. Add in spacey, jazzy jams that sometimes sound lifted from classic progressive albums of yore (think Atomic Rooster, Pink Floyd, Argent, heck, even vintage Santana – you’ll get the flavor, fall under the spell of the music, and emerge on the other side with a grin.

Keith explains: “FdM and London Underground started dating when I heard their version of ‘Queen St. Gang‘. That led me to their latest album, ‘Four‘, which is bloody marvelous from start-to-finish; it’s up there with the Tor Peders album, in my humble opinion, the only thing that stopped FdM from pouncing on it being that the band have already self-released it on vinyl.
What to do? the LP is a natural for FdM but what could be done to enhance/extend/expand it…how about a special colour vinyl edition? Good start, but it needed more and it’s the only album by the band that’s found its way onto vinyl so far…so how about making it a double LP including a bonus LP comprising some of the best tracks from their first three albums?
RESULT!

So, here comes London Undergound’s ‘Space Edition’ – a double LP reproducing their ‘Four’ LP on purple vinyl plus a bonus LP, also on purple vinyl, of a selection of tracks from their previous releases.

There’ll only be 300 copies for sale, so FdM club members will get priority…” SORRY – ALREADY SOLD OUT ON PRE-ORDERS – BUT MAY GET A FEW EXTRAS
