The Room in The Wood – The Mars EP (A Turntable Friend Records 23 November 2018)

Liverpool’s The Room in the Wood to release sci-fi inspired ‘Mars’ EP

Liverpool-based The Room in the Wood will be releasing their ‘The Mars EP’ on November 23 digitally and on limited-edition CD.

Lead track ‘Mars (Won’t Save Us)’ is a riff-based psyche rocker focused on the foolishness of Elon Musk’s ideas about colonising the Red Planet. We are reminded “Mars won’t save us. Mars has no air.” It is accompanied by a psychedelic video composition by ex-Send No Flowers and Moongoose collaborator Mark Jordan.

“We went in the studio to record some tracks and came up with ‘Mars (Won’t Save Us)’, which was a riffy departure from most of our debut album. Lyrically it’s a flat statement that Mars is not a viable option for emigration,” says Dave Jackson.

Released via A Turntable Friend Records, this album follows their debut album ‘The Room in the Wood’ and the ‘Magical Thinking’ EP prior to that, both of which were released earlier in 2018.

Band members Paul Cavanagh and Dave Jackson are once again working together after a huge gap since their post-punk band The Room split back in 1985. After reuniting, this past year has seen them write over 30 new songs.

Featuring contributions by drummer Colin George Lamont (Mark Lanegan, Dave Gahan), this album was recorded by Steve Powell (Michael Head & the Red Elastic Band) at his Liverpool-based Ark Studio and mastered by Pete Maher (Barry Adamson, The Alarm).

‘Every Lie’ is a bluesy, countrified stomper bemoaning the rise of the populist right, and inspired by the late great Johnny Cash – this is a response to Trump and Brexit. ‘Get Clear’ a Spanish guitar-tinged ballad extolling the virtues of escaping cult thinking. It follow ups our song ‘Magical Thinking’, but is sung to a friend escaping some dogmatic cult,” says Dave Jackson.

“Time Machine’ is another vaguely sci-fi rumination, wistfully reflecting on the passage of time filtered through the vision of HG Wells. We thought that ‘Mars’ and ‘Time Machine’ gave the EP a science fiction edge and Mark Jordan’s video reflects that,” says Paul Cavanaugh.

Dave Jackson has been writing and recording since his teens – with The Room, 051, Benny Profane, Dust, Dead Cowboys, as Dave Jackson & The Cathedral Mountaineers, and also with former Shack guitarist John Head. He has recorded and released 10 albums with these various incarnations, notched up 7 John Peel sessions with The Room and Benny Profane, and has also appeared on the Whistle Test, Janice Long and Saturday Live.

Jackson has also toured the UK, Europe and the USA extensively with The Fall, The Violent Femmes, Aztec Camera, The Lemonheads and The Wedding Present. He currently teaches creative writing at Liverpool John Moores University and has developed his novel ‘Violet City’ as a low-budget fantasy feature film.

Apart from The Room, Paul Cavanagh has performed as a solo instrumentalist as Cabin in the Woods and as one of Mike Badger’s Shady Trio. He worked with The Room drummer Alan Wills at Deltasonic Records with The Coral and The Zutons. Paul has also recorded 4 John Peel sessions and released albums with Top, It’s Immaterial, Moongoose, as well as critically acclaimed singles with Gloss. He also played guitar for Chinese Religion, The Balcony and Ludus.

A Turntable Friend Records is an independent record label. currently in its second life. Based in Germany with distribution through SRD (Southern Record Distributors) and Rough Trade, their mission is to keep vinyl alive while casting light on sonic gems of yesteryear and today. 1990s peers of Sarah Records and Slumberland Records, ATF Records has always had a roster as diverse as Secret Shine, The Wolfhounds, Boyracer (with Even As We Speak), The Claim, The Ropers, the Hellfire Sermons, Lorelei, Bradford, Easy and Dose.

As of November 23, The Mars EP will be available across music stores and streaming platforms such as Spotify. It can already be pre-ordered via Bandcamp.

Poptone – Poptone LP (Cleopatra Records 8 June 2018)

Earlier this year, Blackout Radio Show had an exclusive interview (that you can listen HERE) with author and Bauhaus co-founder Kevin Haskins regarding his book about Bauhaus.

He also revealed that Poptone soon will put out an album….

NOW…

Poptone announces teased first offering from debut album, announces West Coast tour
Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets teams with Diva Dompé as Poptone

Bauhaus, Tones On Tail and Love and Rockets – all critically acclaimed bands. Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins were founding members of all three. Now joined by Kevin’s daughter Diva Dompé on bass, they have formed a new band called POPTONE.
The three-piece have announced the impending release of the debut ‘Poptone’ album via Cleopatra Records. This double LP consists of 13 songs from their set, originally recorded for a recent Part Time Punks session on KXLU. The band will also soon be touring the West Coast Tour in May.
Poptone was propelled to life by an epiphany that woke Daniel Ash up in February 2017. In the early hours, loudly jolted awake by Motorhead’s ‘Ace of Spades’, Ash had a light bulb moment…”I need to play live again”.

Borrowing their name from 1979 seminal P.I.L track, Poptone is bringing back to life the ground-breaking music of Bauhaus, Love and Rockets and the otherworldly Tones On Tail, playing a diverse repertoire of their own highly original and hugely influential music.

Their set leans heavily on Tones On Tail, the songs of which have not been performed live for over 30 years! With Diva Dompé faithfully recreating original bassist Glenn Campling’s incredible bass lines, Poptone has essentially resurrected the Tones’ archives. Having played only 27 live dates during their existence, this band remains somewhat of an enigma. Poptone also performs a sprinkling of solo Daniel Ash, a healthy dose of classic Love and Rockets, and a dash of Bauhaus with live sets also featuring the odd inspirational cover to stir things up.

“It’s been a real treat to revisit the unique and eclectic Tones catalog,” says Kevin Haskins. “I feel that there are many people who didn’t get a chance to see us back in the day and so I am excited for them to hear these weird and wonderful songs played live again. With the addition of Bauhaus and Love And Rockets material, it’s a veritable feast for the ears!”
Poptone have been delivering a blistering live show across America over the past year. This will continue in 2018 with eight dates in May already confirmed. With the band rehearsing previously numbers they’ve not yet played live, 2018 looks to be another great year with an eye to writing new material further down the road. The May tour sees the band come to California’s Solana Beach, Pomona, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Santa Cruz, followed by Seattle, Portland and Vancouver.
Poptone are fulfilling a lifelong dream for much of their audience, most of whom would not have seen Tones On Tail play live during their brief existence. Of course, Bauhaus was resurrected in 1998 (after a 15-year absence) and again during 2005-06 and, save for occasional appearances in 2007 & 2008, Love and Rockets bowed out in 1999. For all three groups, but especially with respect to Tones on Tail, this is your chance to seize the day – Go!
The new ‘Poptone’ record will be available digitally, on CD in a mini jacket, and on white vinyl in a striking 2 LP set and can already be pre-ordered with advance copies of the LP available exclusively at Poptone live shows.
For tour announcements, merchandise and news, visit the Poptone website and Facebook. Also order Daniel Ash’s new solo single ‘Alien Love’ at www.danielashmusic.com and Kevin Haskins’ new book ‘Bauhaus – Undead’ from Cleopatra Records at http://bit.ly/2qk1vzu.

Vince Ripper and the Rodent Show – Planet Shockorama (Cherry Red Records 2 June 2017)

Third studio album for the horror punk duo of Ratfink (of Alien Sex Fiend fame) and Vince Ripper (of Rippersville legend).

They started in the 1990’s with their rockabilly DJ sets to continue in the 2000’s possessed by the spirit of the CrampsLux Interior.

Coming from the dark swampy wastelands of Blackpool all the tracks of “Planet Shockorama” have one theme: an alien invasion.

Most of these 14 tracks are cover versions distilled through the filter of Vince Ripper and the Rodent Show: “Planet Claire” (B-52’s), “Teenagers from Mars” (The Misfits), “7 and 7 is” (Love), “I Can’t Find My Mind” (The Cramps), “Silver Machine” (Hawkwind), “Rocket U.S.A. (Suicide), “Mystery Plane” (The Cramps), “Flying Saucer Rock’n’Roll” (Billy Riley), “Est Trip to the Moon” (Alien Sex Fiend) “Scary Monsters” (David Bowie).

I started my day with this album and I have to admit that it is a great starter.

Great fun.

Thank you for this one  Vince Ripper and the Rodent Show.

The Foreign Resort – The American Dream & North American Tour (Moon Sounds Records – USA)

The Foreign Resort Reissues ‘The American Dream’, Touring North America.

the-foreign-resort-the-american-dream-cover

The Foreign Resort will be reissuing CDs for ‘The American Dream’ EP via Texas-based label Moon Sounds Records and have announced dates for their upcoming North American tour. This will be their 11th tour on the continent and will also include 3 Canadian dates.

‘The American Dream’ consists of five songs with a simpler but more intense expression than ever heard before from the band. Following up their 2014 album ‘New Frontiers’, which was produced and mixed byJohn Fryer (Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Cocteau Twins)and ranked among top albums of the year in many blogs and stations like WZBC and KDHX, the band first released ‘The American Dream’ in October 2015.

Led by singer and songwriter Mikkel Jakobsen, The Foreign Resort are Denmark’s finest musical export of post-punk and dark new wave, combining the shadowy mysticism of The Cure’s Pornography era with a driving production aesthetic akin to LCD Soundsystem. Intricate reverb-enveloped guitar lines and Mikkel’s taut and sincere vocal delivery glide over Steffan Petersen’s motorik bass and Morten Hansen’s powerful drumming.Having toured with The Raveonettes, A Place to Bury Strangersand Swervedriver, they have also shared bills with bands like DIIV, The Soft Moon, The KVB and Slowdive.

This tour is one of three made possible through a successful crowdfunding campaign, for which they ended up cooking Danish dinner and playing intimate shows in several American homes, which brought them even closer to the American people.

“That experience goes beyond anything we have done before and it’s so great when we felt that passion about our music and could share it with others. We have some amazing fans and we are so grateful for that,” says Mikkel Jakobsen.

The Foreign Resort are addicted to the allure of America’s lost highways. Since 2010, the band has rigorously played more than 350 shows across the United States and Europe. Highlights include performances at SXSW, Iceland Airwaves, the CMJ Music Marathon, and one of the world’s largest Goth festivals Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig, Germany.

“There’s gonna be some pretty intense drives between cities, but that’s another thing we like about touring. Experiencing countries from the road and, of course, from the many venues we play at. We can’t wait to come over,” says frontman Mikkel Jakobsen.

This autumn, the band’s 2011 EP ‘The Foreign Resort’ finally gets a much deserved vinyl re-issue though Moon Sounds Records thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign via PledgeMusic. This September-October visit to North America is the final tour in support of ‘The American Dream’, after which the band shall return to the studio to record a new full length, set for release in 2017.
