John Cale – ‘POPtical Illusion’

On June 14th, John Cale released his new album, POPtical Illusion, via Domino, and shared its lead single/video, “How We See The Light.”

Despite the album’s playful title, Cale’s second album in just over a year still contains the same feelings of fierce and inquisitive rage that were present in Cale’s much-lauded 2023 album MERCY.

He remains angry, still incensed by the willful destruction that unchecked capitalists and unrepentant conmen have hoisted upon the wonders of this world and the goodness of its people. But this is not at all MERCY II, or some collection of castoffs, as throughout his career of more than six decades, Cale has never been much for repetition. His vanguard-shaping enthusiasms have shifted among ecstatic classicism and unbound rock, classic songcraft and electronic reimagination with proud restlessness. And so, on POPtical Illusion, he foregoes the illustrious cast to burrow mostly alone into mazes of synthesizers and samples, organs and pianos, with words that, as far as Cale goes, constitute a sort of swirling hope, a sage insistence that change is yet possible.

Produced by Cale and longtime artistic partner Nita Scott in his Los Angeles studio, POPtical Illusion is the work of someone trying to turn toward the future – exactly as Cale always has.

Lead single, “How We See The Light,” is one of the most beautiful and redemptive tracks in Cale’s catalogue, featuring pulsing pianos shifting in and out of phase with steadfast drums, all while assorted whorls of noise billow in the background.

Cale considers another relationship’s end and sees it not as a waste of time, but as a chance to learn, an opportunity to get to somewhere unexpected.

Can I close another chapter in the way we run our lives?” he sings, the curious curl of his voice suggesting this is the first time he’s ever asked that.

More decisive in the future, or deliberate in the end?” This longing is reflected in the song’s video, which presents Cale collaborating once again with Pepi Ginsberg, a director noted for “[adding] depth to an already unfathomable piece of art” on their previous work together.

Cale has often said that something shifted inside his mind during the pandemic, realizing that, nearing 80, he was living and working through something that many of his past contemporaries weren’t. He wanted to document it. He wrote more than 80 songs in a period of a little over a year, collectively surveying the range of human experience in the process—humor bled into frustration, regret gave way to forgiveness, sadness tangled with surrealism.

What’s more, Cale has never relegated himself to the old guard, to sitting on the sidelines and kvetching about modernity and the way things used to be done.

The classically trained violist who studied with John Cage and Aaron Copland has long been a hip-hop zealot, especially the creative ways it wields technology to create multi-dimensional textures or build surprising melodies. POPtical Illusion synthesizes those emotions and enthusiasms into a dozen electronic playgrounds, Cale’s magisterial voice webbing across it all with puns and insights, grievances and quips, and some version of truth.

John Cale has always been a musician of the times, helping to usher in titanic shifts in sound and culture.

The bleeding edge drones of his Sun Blindness Music opened the path to The Velvet Underground.

The frantic rock of Fear and Slow Dazzle, not to mention his production with Patti Smith and the Stooges, framed a half century of punk, post-punk, and art-rock to come.

And his curiosity about the way electronics could be more than a gimmick in rock music served as an inspiration to an uncountable number of crucial scenes.

Once again, on POPtical Illusion, Cale stands as a musician of these times.

He looks at the orchestrated turmoil of recent history, furrows his brow in disgust, and then turns on his heels toward a future, even if he—like all of the rest of us, really—doesn’t know just what he’ll find or who exactly he’ll be there. He’s simply happy to be going toward it all.

POPtical Illusion is available on 2xLP, CD, and digitally.

The Domino Mart pink & mint vinyl 2xLP edition pressing of 1000 includes a 7″ featuring 2 exclusive tracks, and a POPitem – a limited edition illusionary twirling paper Objet.

Prog rockers Sacri Monti Return with New Album and European Tour

In recent years, Sacri Monti has transcended sonic expectations to create a singular sound so unique that their name has become synonymous with invention.

Signed to Tee Pee Records, this July the SoCal five-piece are back to show once again why they are one of the label’s leading progressive lights with the release of their third studio album, Retrieval.

Formed in Oceanside in 2012 the band has ridden the crest of an enduring wave of unmissable heavy psych bands that have emerged from the San Diego area. So much so that in 2018, Roadburn Festival invited them to take part in a ‘San Diego Takeover’, which found the band showcasing their inimitable sound alongside peers such as Arctic, Harsh Toke, Joy, and a handful of others.

The first single taken from Retrieval also happens to be the opening salvo, ‘Maelstrom’; a whirling 70s prog rock opus that recalls the chugging riff/organ majesty of Machine Head-era Deep Purple, slung with the Space Ritual vibes of Hawkwind. A fine and fitting way to ease listeners into a heady and head-banging assembly of new songs which, like previous album – 2019’s Waiting Room for the Magic Hour – thrives on the art of keeping you guessing.

Fans will also be pleased to hear that this summer Sacri Monti embark on a European tour in support of the album, dates, and details of which can be found below.

There’s no question that Sacri Monti has upped their game on Retrieval. Due for release on 26th July 2024 via Tee Pee Records we highly advise you to do the same. Pre-order the album here and check out ‘Maelstrom’’ now!

REZN release new single ‘Indigo’ / New album this Friday

This Friday, Chicago’s REZN will release their new album, Burden, via Sargent House.

Today, they present “Indigo,” the album opener, alongside a visualizer.

“Indigo” finds the rhythm section of bassist Phil Cangelosi and drummer Patrick Dunn churning out an authoritative Godflesh-like battery while vocalist/guitarist Rob McWilliams and synth player/saxophonist Spencer Ouellette drape their martial stomp in ominous interwoven melodies. The marriage of brute force with sublime textures has always been a key tactic in REZN’s approach, but the spectrum of the band’s mercurial temperaments has never felt as clearly defined and fully harnessed as it does on Burden.

While REZN’s previous album, Solace, embraced similar contrasts, it leaned towards the loftier peaks in the band’s sound, as evidenced in the album’s artwork of snow topped mountains provided by Adam Burke / Nightjar Illustration. Burden’s artwork is a literal continuation of Solace’s landscape painting, showing the fiery depths at the foot of the mountain range.

Tonight, REZN kick off their North American tour with Pallbearer. Following, they’ll headline dates across the US before heading to Europe to play with Russian Circles. A full list of dates can be found below and tickets for all dates are on sale now.

Perry Blake – ‘Concertina’ from landmark anniversary album ‘Death of a Society Girl’

Iconic Irish artist PERRY BLAKE presents ‘Concertina’ single ahead of landmark album ‘Death of a Society Girl’

Ahead of releasing his new album ‘Death of a Society Girl’, Irish singer-songwriter Perry Blake presents the light-filled cinematic single ‘Concertina’, following the epic title track ‘Death of a Society Girl’ featuring Paul McGann, best known for his roles in BBC’s ‘Doctor Who’‘Withnail & I’, ‘Empire of the Sun’, ‘Alien 3’ and ‘Queen of the Damned’.

Out on June 21 via Moochin’ About Records, this album marks 26 years for Blake as a recording artist. It’s also his first music in five years, following the critically acclaimed ‘Songs of Praise’ (5 Stars MOJO). Very much of the here and now, this album also offers traces of Perry’s previous heady work – not dissimilar to his French Top-40 eponymous debut album – finding Perry at the height of his powers.

The ‘Death of a Society Girl’ album was co-written and co-produced with long-term collaborator Graham Murphy (Clannad, Sharon Shannon, Marie Brennan). These nine compositions feature Blake’s hallmark surrealist lyrics and original artwork by Syrian-born artist Helen Abbas.

Known for his delicate, downtempo and beautifully melancholic output and uniquely soothing timbre, he is well known as a collaborator of Françoise Hardy, who sang on ‘War in France’ (from his album ‘Still Life’). He also contributed lyrics for her platinum-selling album ‘Tant de belles choses’, having co-written, mixed and produced two songs (‘Moments’ and ‘So Many Things’) on this record, together with Marco Sabiuhe. Blake would later release his own version of the latter track.

Hailing from Sligo county, Perry Blake has been dubbed one of music’s great untapped resources. Polydor UK released his debut album ‘Perry Blake’ in 1998 (with three singles chosen as ‘Singles of the Week’ on Jo Wiley BBC Radio 1), after which he moved to France. He achieved cult status there and across Europe, releasing a string of critically-acclaimed studio albums, a live album recorded at Cirque Royal Brussels with a full orchestra, as well as the soundtracks for ‘Presque Rien’ and ‘Trois Petites Filles’.

Over the years, his musical endeavours has led him to collaborate with numerous musical luminaries, including Toby Pitman (Paul McCartney, George Michael, David Arnold, Clint Mansell, Shirley Bassey),Steve Jansen (Japan, Rain Tree Crow), Glenn Garrett (Dead Can Dance, Brendan Perry), Neil Conti (David Bowie, Prefab Sprout), Rik Carter (The Mission, All About Eve), Marco Sabiu (Ennio Morricone, Tanita Tikaram, Luciano Pavarotti)Dickon Hinchliffe (Tindersticks), and world-renowned French electronic artist Émilie Simon.

Perry Blake’s melancholic, melodic soundscapes have featured in many European TV series and cinematic works. Between 2006 and 2011, these include ‘Tiger Lily’ and ‘Clara Sheller’ (France’s version of ‘Sex in the City’), plus hit Italian movie ‘L’uomo cheama’  starring Monica Belluci. He has also appeared regularly on French TV and toured Europe with Carla Bruni, as well as with the French National Jazz Orchestra.

Perry Blake has published the children’s book ‘Gatos em Lissadell’, as part of a collection by 12 authors, including former U.S president Jimmy Carter, Will Smith and Julie Andrews. He also has a separate collaborative music project with Glenn Garrett and Graham Murphy, called Electro Sensitive Behaviour.

‘Concertina’ is out now via Bandcamp. On June 21, ‘Death of a Society Girl’ will be released on CD and digitally, including on Apple MusicSpotify and Bandcamp, where it is available for pre-order, including three bonus remixes by UK electronic artists KosmetiQ and Inertia.

Delusive Relics – Mycelium EP

Electronic band, Delusive Relics have announced the release of their latest EP, Mycelium.

Mycelium delves into the mystical world of fairy rings – those captivating natural formations spawned by underground fungal networks. These networks, predominantly led by species like Marasmius oreades, extend outward from a central point, nourishing themselves with organic matter as they sprawl. Their expansion yields nutrients, prompting lush grass growth along the network’s periphery, fashioning the signature ring shape.

In folklore and myth, fairy rings are often ascribed to the whims of fairies, elves, and other fantastical beings, hence their evocative name. Across diverse cultures, these rings are steeped in notions of magic, enchantment, and spiritual import, serving as the muse for countless legends.

In the EP’s final track,  “Mycelium”, Delusive Relics collaborates with Juls Garat from Pilgrims of the Yearning.

Delusive Relics, a duo helmed by Farhood Nik on male vocals, synthesizers, and composition, alongside Anis Oveisi on keyboards, invites Vanessa Hale to lend her vocals to “Fairy Ring” and “Climax,” infusing the compositions with ethereal allure.

Astari Nite – “What A Rainbow Feels Like”

Founded in 2007 Astari Nite is a Florida, USA quartet that crosses an obscure mix between gothic rock and post-punk, exploring themes of death, love and the occult.

Their first four track EP Requiem Mass came out on CD in 2011 and was followed by the digital singles “Waves” (2012) and “Pyramids” (2013).

They’ve played alongside Peter Murphy, Cold Cave, Modern English, and Apoptygma Berzerk and in 2014 they released their debut album, Stereo Waltz via German record label Dance Macabre.

In 2016 they returned with a self-released album, Until The End Of The Moon but 2017 was the year that they had their feet both on USA and Europe when their 4 track Dreams Of Majesty EP was released by Cleopatra Records (USA) and Dance Macabre (Europe).

2018 saw the release of the album Midnight Conversations via Cleopatra and two years later it was followed by Here Lies released by Negative Gain Productions.

Two more digital single followed in 2021: “Pocket Full Of Posies” and “All Else Is A Curse”.

Now, as a Negative Gain Productions’ recording artists, Astari Nite has unveiled another new single, “What A Rainbow Feels Like”.  The single appears on the band’s forthcoming album, Resolution Of Happiness.

The never-ending question why and how, always comes to mind, replays continuously! “What a Rainbow Feels Like”, comes off as an innocent bit of dialogue. I sacrificed a lot in my peculiar ways. Perhaps I owed myself a reminder song that I can replay at times, when I am feeling blue. We ate the cake, we screamed and shout!” – Mychael (Astari Nite)

The album, Resolution Of Happiness will be available on vinyl LP, CD and digital formats via Negative Gain Productions on June 21st.

Dichro – “Mercy” single

Darkwave band Dichro was formed during the beginning of the pandemic as a fun recording side- project.

Their singer, Charmaine Evonne is an artist, a dancer, writer, singer, songwriter, actress of stage and screen, visual artist, model, graphic designer, seamstress, cat-and-people trainer, and photographer.

Their first release was a cover of Dead Can Dance’s “The Ubiquitous Mr Lovegrove”.

Dichro are: Charmaine Evonne – vocals, Tracey Whorton – drums, Dirk Miller – guitar, Peter Guellard – bass, programming

They has just unveiled their latest single & video, “Mercy” from the forthcoming full-length album due out in August via Distortion Productions. The song carries a message that we should have mercy not just in our every day encounters, but free one another from judgement for choosing how to believe, if we believe, and what we believe. If we can start seeing one another with empathic eyes and hearts, perhaps we can rid our global atmosphere of so much fear and uncertainty. “Mercy” is an outreach piece.

Says vocalist, Charmaine Evonne: “We are reaching out to ask that everyone calm down a bit, take a breath, and be more conscientious of our actions. It is a heartfelt plea that we consider whether we are helping or harming one another, practice empathy, and if we cannot help, to at least not harm. “

The Halo Trees new album Where The Deep Ends

After three meticulous years of work, the new The Halo Trees album “Where The Deep Ends” is finally finished. It’s a beautiful headphone album for melancholic hours with a rather calm mood. Deep male vocals and a sad violin go together with atmospheric guitars and groovy bass and organic drums. Indie Rock meets some Post-Punk vibes and some Progressive Rock elements that are subtly woven in unusual harmonies or crooked bars that make the songs interesting. What the band calls Deep Dark Indie Rock is an eclectic sound that should appeal to listeners from The National to David Bowie to Nick Cave

The previous two albums “Antennas To The Sky” (2019) and “Summergloom” (2021) could also convince the media. The album “Summergloom” then even stayed in the German Alternative Charts (DAC) for the maximum duration of 8 weeks. And also the most recent singles “Big Bang Coming” and “Escapism” all made it into the DAC charts.

With “Where The Deep Ends” The Halo Trees present a rather quiet album that goes into great depth both musically and in terms of content. Singer Sascha Blach asks many questions about meaning and deals with topics such as feeling strange in the world, happiness, truth, love, nostalgia and longing in poetic texts. He has also written a book that will be distributed alongside the album. Both are only available in physical form as a package.

In this book, Blach presents images, short stories, philosophical texts, poems, and commentaries that expand on the ten songs of the album „Where The Deep Ends“ in various ways. The texts are dark, hopeful, ironic, emotional, thoughtful and enigmatic all at the same time. Blach delves deeper into the content of the songs,  but does not shy away from giving them new layers of meaning. A little gem for anyone who likes to philosophize and for whom music is more than just background entertainment.

The musical journey of The Halo Trees has just begun, and chances are we’re about to witness one of Germany’s most promising alternative bands …

Discography:
Time And Tide Wait For No Man (EP, 2018)
Antennas To The Sky (Album, 2019)
Summergloom (Album, 2021)
Reverberations Of A Gloomy Summer (EP, 2022)
Where The Deep Ends (Album, 2024)

Chiral single & video ‘In The Company Of Wolves’, out now

Alt Rock/Electronic force Chiral release their fifth single, ‘In The Company of Wolves’, merging the bridges of Punk-infused Rock and Alternative Metal. Dive into the sonic underworld with Chiral, the wicked 4-piece Irish renegades, boldly trespassing musical borders, concocting a potion of punk, metal, rock, and dance with a side of avant-garde.

Born in the shadows of early 2023, multi-instrumentalist, producer, Gary Duncan joined forces with vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Adam Brewer, birthing the RATM-inspired anthem ‘Digital Whispers‘ a haunting ode to the existential dread of AI’s influence on humanity. Duncan’s guitar sorcery seduced vocalist Adam Brewer into this dark alliance from the very start. Joining this musical séance to complete the unholy quartet and glue it all together. Eddie “Graveyard” Delaney bringing the thunder on drums, a long-time friend and musical conspirator of Duncans, and rounding out the grit and dirt of the low-end, the bass behemoth Al “Bluster Bhoy” Tierney.

Speaking of the new single, the band says; “”In The Company Of Wolves” is a dark, haunting song inspired by the initial call and response between the bass and guitar that set the tone for this song and shaped how the lyrics and story unfolded, as it had a very dark fairytale vibe.

The lyrics tell the story of a vulnerable character navigating a perilous world, drawing on the symbolism of Little Red Riding Hood, with the wolves representing danger and deceit.

Set in a mysterious forest of hidden threats and secrets, the narrative builds to a climax where the protagonist, pushed to her limits, seizes a moment of empowerment.

The imagery of “50 seconds to shoot your shot” and “blood red revenge” underscores her reclaiming agency through violent retribution, ultimately ending her torment. The song encapsulates survival, resistance, and vengeance against predatory forces.”

Although ‘Digital Whispers’ is where Chiral started, this was a song they had no plans to release, however this all changed after the release of  ‘I Bring Chaos’, and how quickly interest in Chiral started to build.

From Chiral’s genesis to the darker debut release of  ‘I Bring Chaos’ a song that dives headfirst into the drug-fuelled underworld, it’s music video a graffiti-stained descent into madness. Released exclusively on Chiral’s YouTube channel on January 27th, 2024, “it’s not just a song; it’s a macabre dance with the absurd”.

In a twist of fate, shortly after the I bring Chaos video shoot, ‘GraveYard Ed’ decided to exit Chiral, this left an opening at the drum stool. After auditioning some awesome drummers for the vacant position, Chiral’s chief axe wielder, Gary Duncan decided to move over to drums. This allowed the awesomely talented Chris Craig (Vendetta Love) to step into the role of Chiral guitarist. The newly reformed Chiral wasted no time, plotting their next move through the shadows.

With further releases like ‘Digital Whispers’ and ‘Kubrick Odyssey‘ exclusively on YouTube in early 2024, a dark pilgrimage through Germany in May, and accolades echoing from the farthest corners of the globe, the chaos of Chiral knows no bounds.

Imagine this pandemonium through the prism of chirality, where rebellion intertwines with the symphony of skulls and spray cans. Chiral is not just a band; it is a carnival of sonic madness, where the darkness beckons you.

Rodney Cromwell – Madeline Trip

London electronic indiepop stalwart Rodney Cromwell presents ‘Madeline Trip’, previewing his summer EP

London-based indie electronic artist Rodney Cromwell has announced that he will release his new ‘Exercise Class’ EP on June 14 via Happy Robots Records. This four-track offering follows his 2023 EP ‘The Winter Palace Remixes’.

Previewing the new ‘Exercise Class’ EP, Cromwell drops as a teaser ‘Madeline Trip’, the shortest track on this EP, being a 55-second electronic hauntological trip inspired by Marcel Proust’s seven-volume novel ‘In Search of Lost Time’. This is also the first song usually introduced to Cromwell’s live audience when his band enters onto stage.

Rodney Cromwell is the solo moniker of Adam Cresswell of two John Peel faves – 90s indie folk band Saloon and 2000s electronic duo Arthur and Martha. Since debuting with the ‘Age of Anxiety’ album, Cromwell has been featured in NME, Electronic Sound, Huffington Post, Paste, Shindig!, Louder Than War, The Big Takeover, Magic RPM, Post-Punk.com and Bandcamp Daily. National radio play includes BBC 6 Music in the UK, RTE in Ireland, airplay in Tokyo, and RNE3 in Spain, for whom he also recorded a live session.

Rodney Cromwell live is a joyful mixed-media extravaganza, incorporating analogue synths, video visuals and live instrumentation, interjected by Rodney’s ‘offbeat wit” (NME). Described ‘like a spiritual experience”, he has shared the stage with icons such as A Flock of Seagulls, Damo Suzuki, Pram, Death & Vanilla, Rowetta, M!R!M and Steve Davis. In 2022, he recorded a live session for Electronic Sound and supported Blancmange on a number of dates, further cementing his reputation as one of the most exciting live acts on the electronic music scene.

The ‘Exercise Class’ EP will drop into your inboxes soon, just in time for the summer. With its dead-pan spoken-word lyrics, melodic chorus and Cromwell’s signature classic synth sound,  the title track draws influences from LCD Soundsystem, Metronomy and New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’, as well as the iconic soundtracks of Jane Fonda workouts videos.

As with all output from this retro-futuristic songcrafter, Rodney Cromwell’s new releases brings music is as fitting for the indie-disco dancefloor as a sweaty exercise studio.

On May 24, ‘Madeline Trip’ will be available everywhere digitally, including Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp. The full ‘Exercise Class’ EP, which is already available for pre-order, will be released on June 14.
